Rumors are swirling around Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, and his potential retirement following the launch of the next Xbox console. This speculation arose amid recent job cuts at Microsoft, where approximately 9,000 employees were laid off, representing 4% of the company’s workforce. Many of these cuts affected gaming-related positions, prompting fans to direct their frustration toward Spencer. His communication to employees, emphasizing the company’s continued success, hasn’t helped ease the criticism.
The rumor originated from a well-known Call of Duty leaker, TheGhostOfHope, who suggested that Spencer plans to step down after the next-generation Xbox is released. Sarah Bond, currently the President of Xbox, is rumored to succeed him. While industry insiders are divided on the credibility of this claim, some, like Jez Corden of Windows Central, dismiss it outright. However, Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming reported that he had heard similar whispers during the recent Summer Game Fest.
Regardless of Spencer’s future decisions, the timeline for a new Xbox console remains uncertain. Microsoft’s recent collaboration with AMD indicates plans for future console development, with a potential release date in 2027. This new system could either be a successor to the Series X or a high-powered gaming PC.
In the more immediate future, a partnership between Microsoft and Asus will see the launch of the ROG Xbox Ally handheld series this holiday season. This suggests Microsoft’s continued commitment to innovation and diversification in the gaming space.
