Google is facing a wave of criticism after a recent mandatory software update promised to enhance the battery performance of select Pixel 6a devices but ended up doing the opposite. This update, part of Android 16, will reduce both the battery life and charging capability once the battery hits 400 charging cycles. Although this sounds counterintuitive, it’s intended to prevent overheating and potential fires, an issue reported in some units.
This isn’t the first time Google has implemented such measures; the Pixel 4a had a similar update that significantly impacted its battery capacity. The update, set to automatically roll out beginning July 8, aims to address safety concerns tied to specific battery suppliers.
For those affected, Google offers three options for compensation starting July 21. Users can have their Pixel 6a batteries replaced without charge, receive a discount code for a new phone from the Google Store, or opt for a cash payout. The exact value of these offers remains undisclosed, but as a reference, Pixel 4a users previously received a $100 voucher or $50 cash.
To see if your device is impacted, you can verify on Google’s support site. This situation highlights ongoing challenges in battery performance and safety across their devices, prompting enhanced scrutiny and user dissatisfaction.
