E-commerce giant Shopify has recently expanded its team by acquiring the communication platform Threads.com, a venture previously funded by Sequoia Capital. Although the financial details of the transaction haven’t been disclosed, the announcement indicated that the team behind Threads.com will be integrated into Shopify’s operations.
Threads.com emerged from stealth in 2019, when it launched with a significant funding of $10.5 million. The platform quickly gained attention in a crowded market, especially after Meta introduced its social network also named Threads. This move led to some confusion among consumers, with many downloading the Threads.com app mistakenly thinking it was associated with Meta.
The acquisition follows a period of notable interest in Threads.com from various companies. The founders of the Threads.com platform considered several proposals, ultimately selecting Shopify as their new home. The driving factor behind this decision was the appeal of engaging with a larger scale operation and the broader opportunities it presented for innovation.
Meta’s choice to opt for the Threads.net domain after the introduction of its social network led to increased accidental traffic and downloads for the Threads.com app. According to analytics provided by data.ai, the app experienced a considerable surge in downloads, reaching 880,000 on iOS in just one week in July, and surpassing a million lifetime downloads on Android shortly after Meta’s social network launch.
The term “Threads” holds significant weight in the tech community, due to its connotations with connectivity and networking, both on professional and social platforms. This likely contributed to Meta’s choice of naming for its social network initiative.
Rousseau Kazi, the co-founder and CEO of Threads.com and a former Facebook employee, emphasized the power and universality of the term “threads” in the world of digital communication. It symbolizes the interconnectedness that such platforms aim to provide, both in social circles and within companies.
While Shopify has welcomed Kazi and his team, the details regarding how Threads.com’s technology and expertise will be incorporated within Shopify’s existing framework have not been explicitly shared. Nevertheless, the acquisition is set to bolster Shopify’s capabilities in facilitating communication and operational efficiency.
With Shopify’s continuous growth and its commitment to empowering businesses of all sizes, the integration of a communication platform like Threads.com is anticipated to enhance the company’s offerings. The partnership could potentially pave the way for improved internal collaboration and customer engagement within the Shopify ecosystem.
