Seiko Expands Its Alpinist Mechanical GMT Line With New Blue and Black Japan-Exclusive Models
Seiko has introduced two fresh additions to its Alpinist Mechanical GMT collection, bringing new blue and black dial options to one of the brand’s most adventure-focused mechanical watch families. The new models, known as the HBC008J and HBC009J, are set to launch in Japan on September 11 with a price of 155,100 yen each, which is approximately $983.
These watches will not be available through standard retail channels. Instead, Seiko is offering them exclusively through its Global Brand Core Shop network in Japan, a distribution route typically reserved for select models and dedicated collectors.
The HBC008J features a striking blue dial with a radial sunray finish, giving it a dynamic look that shifts with the light. The HBC009J takes a more understated approach with a black dial, offering a classic and versatile style. Both versions are paired with leather straps and carry the familiar rugged elegance that has helped the Alpinist series build a loyal following.
Under the hood, both watches use Seiko’s automatic caliber 6R54 movement. This mechanical GMT movement offers a 72-hour power reserve, making it practical for travelers and everyday wearers who may rotate between watches. Accuracy is rated at +25 to -15 seconds per day.
The case dimensions remain the same as the existing Alpinist Mechanical GMT platform. Each watch measures 39.5 mm in diameter, 13.6 mm thick, and 46.4 mm from lug to lug. The stainless-steel case includes Seiko’s Diashield coating, designed to improve scratch resistance and preserve the watch’s appearance over time.
A key part of the appeal is the GMT function, marked by a red-tipped hand that allows the wearer to track a second time zone. This makes the new Seiko Alpinist GMT models especially useful for frequent travelers, international business users, or anyone who regularly follows another time zone.
The watches also retain one of the Alpinist line’s most recognizable features: the internal rotating compass ring. Operated through the crown at 4 o’clock, this simplified compass function connects the new models to the original outdoor spirit of the Alpinist series, which dates back to 1959.
For readability, Seiko has kept the signature wedge-shaped hour markers and added Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9. The combination gives the dial a balanced look while improving legibility. A curved sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating helps protect the dial and reduce glare.
The specifications also include 200 meters of water resistance, antimagnetic construction, a screw-down crown, and a screw-down case back. Both watches are fitted with 20 mm calfskin leather straps and use a one-push triple-fold clasp for added convenience.
The HBC008J and HBC009J are made in Japan and come with Seiko’s three-year warranty. Neither model is being marketed as a limited edition, but their Japan-only release through select stores may still make them difficult to obtain for buyers overseas.
