Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro launch could face an unexpected obstacle, and this time the issue may not be TSMC’s chip production capacity. Instead, the pressure appears to be coming from a tightening DRAM supply chain, as rising demand for AI hardware continues to reshape the semiconductor market.

TSMC has long been one of Apple’s most dependable manufacturing partners, producing millions of advanced chips every year for iPhones, iPads, and Macs. For the next-generation iPhone lineup, Apple is expected to rely on TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm process for the A20 Pro chipset, a major upgrade that could power the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

However, recent supply chain claims suggest that TSMC may already have around $1 billion worth of A20 Pro units waiting to move forward in the production process. The problem is not the chips themselves. The reported bottleneck is DRAM, a crucial memory component needed before the chip packages can advance to the next stage.

TSMC is reportedly making strong progress with its 2nm manufacturing roadmap. The company is said to be moving toward a major target of 100,000 monthly wafers before the end of 2026, helped by growing demand from Apple and AI-focused customers. Its advanced packaging work, including Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module Packaging, is also expected to play an important role in next-generation chip production.

Normally, Apple’s mobile processors enter mass production around July or August. That schedule gives the company enough time to prepare inventory before its usual September iPhone launch window. Every year, Apple needs an enormous number of chips ready for new iPhone models, and TSMC has historically been able to deliver at scale.

This year may be different because memory supply is becoming increasingly competitive. AI companies are buying large quantities of high-performance memory, especially LPDDR5X RAM, which is valued for its combination of speed, bandwidth, and power efficiency. These same qualities make it highly desirable for premium smartphones, creating a direct supply chain conflict between AI hardware makers and consumer electronics companies.

Apple is reportedly trying several approaches to secure more DRAM, including talks with existing suppliers and exploring lower-cost options from additional manufacturers. So far, those efforts have not fully solved the issue. If Apple cannot obtain enough DRAM at the required volume, it may have to pay higher prices to secure supply and keep A20 Pro production moving.

The situation highlights a major shift in the semiconductor industry. In past years, Apple’s massive purchasing power often gave it a strong advantage when competing for components. Now, the explosion in AI server and accelerator demand has created a new kind of competition. Memory suppliers are prioritizing customers willing to pay premium prices, and even Apple may not be immune to delays.

If the DRAM shortage continues, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could face production delays. That does not necessarily mean Apple will postpone its official launch event, but it could lead to limited availability, longer delivery times, or a staggered rollout in some markets.

The impact may not be limited to the iPhone. Apple’s broader product lineup could also feel the strain. Reports indicate that MacBook Air shipments have already been affected, with some models facing availability delays into September. Since Apple relies on a tightly coordinated supply chain across multiple product categories, a shortage in one critical component can quickly ripple through the rest of its hardware plans.

For now, the iPhone 18 delay remains a possibility rather than a certainty. TSMC appears to be performing well on chip manufacturing, but Apple’s ability to secure enough DRAM may decide whether its next flagship iPhones arrive on schedule and in sufficient quantities.

If memory demand from AI companies keeps rising, the smartphone industry could face a tougher component market in the months ahead. Apple’s next major iPhone upgrade may depend not only on advanced 2nm chip technology, but also on whether the company can win the race for memory supply.
