Samsung Secures New 2nm Chip Customers as Foundry Business Shows Signs of Recovery
Samsung is gaining fresh momentum in the advanced semiconductor race as it teases new customers for its 2-nanometer chip manufacturing technology. The company revealed during its latest earnings call in Korea that it has secured new 2nm projects from a major cloud service provider, along with customers in the high-performance computing market.
The update is an important signal for Samsung Foundry, which has been working to strengthen its position in the highly competitive chip manufacturing industry. Demand for smaller, more power-efficient chips continues to rise as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, data centers, and HPC workloads require faster and more efficient processors.
Samsung said the newly secured customers have already started design work for products that will use the company’s 2nm process technology. This suggests that the projects are moving beyond early discussions and into more serious development stages.
The company also expects 2nm activity to accelerate sharply. According to Samsung’s management, the number of 2nm projects secured for 2026 is expected to more than double compared to the previous year. Profitability remains one of the biggest questions surrounding Samsung’s foundry division. While the company does not provide separate profit and loss figures for the business, management said the foundry operation has seen meaningful year-over-year improvement.
Samsung attributed the improvement to higher factory utilization, better yields, and price increases. These factors are helping the business recover, and management said the turnaround is gaining momentum. However, the company remained cautious, noting that the foundry business depends heavily on customer orders and project timing.
Rather than declaring a full recovery, Samsung said it expects to achieve a turnaround in the near future. That careful wording suggests the business is improving, but profitability may still depend on how quickly new orders convert into volume production.
Samsung also said it is in discussions with Broadcom and other companies for advanced process technology projects. The two companies recently drew attention after announcing a major memorandum of understanding valued at $200 billion, covering cooperation in memory and foundry businesses over the next five years.
The collaboration is expected to focus partly on Samsung’s 2nm technology for Broadcom’s chips. If the partnership progresses as expected, it could become a major boost for Samsung’s foundry ambitions and help the company secure more long-term demand for its most advanced manufacturing nodes.
Samsung’s latest comments show that the company is working to build confidence around its 2nm roadmap. Securing cloud and HPC customers is especially important because these markets are among the fastest-growing areas in the semiconductor industry. Chips built for data centers, AI workloads, networking, and large-scale computing require cutting-edge performance and energy efficiency, making 2nm technology a key battleground.
