Google says the stored selfie video is encrypted and used by default only for sign-in and account recovery purposes. Users can delete it at any time. Google may also ask for permission to use the video to improve its fraud and deepfake detection systems, but that requires user consent.

Can Google’s selfie video system stop deepfakes?

Google says the feature includes multiple protections against fake photos, prerecorded clips, and manipulated videos. One of the key defenses is liveness detection.

Liveness detection tries to confirm that a real person is present in front of the camera. For example, the system may ask you to turn your head, blink, or follow movement instructions. This makes simple attacks much harder. A printed photo, a static image on another screen, or an old video recording is unlikely to pass these checks.

Biometrics should not be your only protection

Security guidance from organizations such as NIST has long warned that biometrics should not be used as the only form of authentication. Your face, fingerprint, or voice can be convenient, but they are not secrets in the same way passwords or private cryptographic keys are.

You can change a stolen password. You can replace a compromised security key. You cannot change your face.

A strong Google Account setup should include a passkey where possible, a secure recovery email, carefully chosen recovery contacts, and two-step verification. For users who need the highest level of protection, hardware security keys remain one of the strongest options.

For most everyday users, Google’s selfie video recovery could be a useful backup. It may help if you lose your phone, replace your computer, forget your password, or cannot access your usual recovery method. It is especially helpful when combined with passkeys and other account recovery tools.

It is also likely better than relying only on SMS verification, which has known weaknesses.

However, people who are high-value targets should be more cautious. If you are likely to face targeted attacks, deepfake attempts, or advanced phishing campaigns, you should prioritize passkeys, hardware security keys, and stronger account protection methods. In those cases, biometric recovery may introduce risks that are not worth the convenience.
