About a year ago, Samsung faced challenges at its Taylor plant, reportedly pulling staff due to a slump in chip orders. However, the tides seem to be turning favorably for the tech giant. Recent developments suggest that Samsung is bracing for a surge in semiconductor orders, with key personnel being relocated to its Texas facility. This move aims to accelerate the plant’s readiness for full production.
The Taylor plant already boasts a substantial $17 billion investment, with a targeted completion date set for 2026.
Personnel being sent to Taylor bring expertise from Samsung’s Global Infrastructure Headquarters, specializing in process, equipment, yield, and quality — crucial components of successful silicon manufacturing.
Reports indicate: “A significant portion of the team dispatched to the Taylor fab will include experts from the Global Infrastructure Headquarters and those specializing in processes below 3 nanometers. Setup and yield verification will align with customer specifications at the U.S. site.”
This strategic move is likely in response to potential U.S. firms interested in partnering with Samsung for lucrative chip deals. The plant is expected to kick off production in early 2026, with plans to manufacture 2nm GAA wafers on a large scale.
Although initial yield estimates for this technology stand at 30 percent, prototype mass production of the Exynos 2600 on the 2nm node has begun. Another report suggests Samsung is aiming for a 70-percent yield by year’s end and has finalized the basic design of its second-generation 2nm GAA process. The development of the third-generation 2nm GAA node, known as SF2P+, is also in the pipeline for the next two years. If yields improve across these iterations, Samsung could potentially match TSMC’s competitive edge.
