Samsung, the prominent player in the foldable smartphone market, has witnessed a significant downturn in its sales. In the first quarter of 2024, while the global sales of foldable smartphones have surged by 49%, Samsung experienced a 42% plunge in comparison to the same period the previous year. This dramatic decrease has cost Samsung its leading position in the foldables market.
Huawei has emerged as the new frontrunner, boasting a staggering growth of 257% and seizing a market share of 35%. The surge in Huawei’s foldable device sales is largely attributed to the successful launch of the Mate X5, a folding flagship with an integrated 5G modem. Additionally, the Huawei Pocket 2 is projected to mirror the popularity of its predecessors, further consolidating the company’s dominance.
This shift in the market is due in part to the robust growth of foldable smartphone sales in China, a region where Samsung has a comparatively smaller footprint. Huawei’s triumph comes on the back of being able to adapt to the market with innovative offerings that resonate with the increasing consumer demand for advanced foldable devices.
Honor, the brand that spun off from Huawei, has also made remarkable strides, attaining a growth rate of 460% and earning a market share of 12%. This is largely thanks to Honor’s ability to extend its foldable smartphone offerings beyond the Chinese market, capitalizing on new market opportunities.
Motorola follows closely and has shown an impressive sales growth of 1,473%, just trailing behind Honor with a market share of 11%. The figures reflect a growing interest and consumer demand for foldable smartphones, particularly devices that fold vertically, which account for 55% of all foldable smartphones sold, a category led by the likes of the Galaxy Z Fold5.
The landscape of foldable smartphones is evolving, as evidenced by these recent market shifts. The success of Huawei and the explosive growth of other brands like Honor and Motorola demonstrate the importance of continuous innovation and understanding market trends in maintaining a competitive edge in the rapidly growing foldable smartphone industry.
The increased consumer interest in these advanced devices presents a unique challenge for manufacturers to innovate and provide cutting-edge technology that meets the expectations of tech-savvy buyers. As the marketplace for foldables becomes more crowded, companies must differentiate their offerings with distinctive features and improved performance to captivate the audience and retain their market share.
