The foldable smartphone market has experienced a significant shakeup in the first quarter of 2024, with Huawei at the forefront of this thrilling evolution. The company has reported a staggering 257 percent growth year-over-year, firmly establishing itself as the leading vendor for this innovative technology sector during this period.
Despite the impressive performance from Huawei, it was not the only brand to enjoy growth in foldable smartphone shipments. Motorola astonished the industry with an unprecedented growth spurt of 1,260 percent year-over-year. Honor, the former subsidiary of Huawei, also made headway with a notable 480 percent increase, and Vivo wasn’t far behind, charting a 331 percent growth.
These surges in adoption and interest came amid a backdrop where other industry stalwarts faced setbacks. Samsung, widely recognized as the forerunner in foldable smartphones, experienced a 25 percent decline in growth. OPPO, another key player in the market, felt the impact even more substantially with a significant decrease of 70 percent in their foldable smartphone growth.
Huawei’s success can largely be attributed to the widespread acclaim of its Mate X5 foldable smartphone, which helped elevate its shipments to unprecedented levels. The company doesn’t seem to be resting on its laurels, however, as it has plans to release a revolutionary triple-foldable smartphone later in the year.
This milestone comes ahead of Huawei’s anticipation to unveil its self-sufficient operating system, HarmonyOS Next, slated to debut in September. The new OS symbolizes Huawei’s ambition to break free from Google’s Android ecosystem and embark on an independent path. This strategy could potentially heighten the brand’s appeal and further drive momentum for its products.
Across the Pacific, Apple is closely monitoring the foldable market dynamics as it gears up for its venture into the foldable smartphone arena. The tech giant has already taken proactive measures in the Chinese market, offering substantial discounts on its iPhone 15 lineup, with reductions as steep as $318. This tactic seems to be a response to the combination of Huawei’s resurgence and a general decline in demand, possibly influencing Apple’s strategy and the timing of its foldable iPhone release.
As the year progresses, the competition will undoubtedly intensify. Huawei is expected to launch its Mate 70 series, setting up a direct clash with Apple’s iPhone 16, which will need to feature remarkable innovations to compete effectively. Given these developments, there could be a strategic shift resulting in delayed plans for Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone segment.
The foldable smartphone market is gearing up for more excitement and innovation, as industry leaders vie for dominance and new entrants like Apple seek to make their mark. With such rapid advancements, consumers can expect an array of cutting-edge foldable options in the near future.
