Samsung Assembles Dedicated Team for 1nm Chip Innovation, Eyes 2029 for Mass Production Launch

Samsung is making significant strides in the hyper-competitive world of semiconductor technology. As progress continues with their 2nm GAA process, the tech giant is already setting its sights on an even more ambitious goal: their very own 1nm process. A new report reveals that Samsung has assembled a dedicated team to spearhead this endeavor. Producing 1nm wafers will necessitate advanced equipment known as ‘high-NA EUV exposure machines.’ The latest report does not clarify whether Samsung has ordered these specialized machines yet. Meanwhile, TSMC, a formidable competitor in the semiconductor field, is already advancing its sub-2nm chips and reportedly began taking 2nm wafer orders earlier this year. Samsung’s efforts with its 2nm GAA technology show promise, with initial yields reaching 30 percent, a notable improvement from the 3nm process, but there’s still much work to be done.

TSMC is also reportedly working on a 1.4nm node, so Samsung’s push towards a 1nm breakthrough could provide them with a competitive edge. Sources suggest the company’s 1nm initiative is termed the ‘dream semiconductor process.’ Critical to achieving this dream is the acquisition and use of high-NA EUV exposure equipment, which Samsung has not yet secured.
