Rod Fergusson Departs Blizzard After Five Years Leading Diablo

Rod Fergusson, the influential general manager behind Blizzard’s Diablo franchise, has decided to step away from the company after a significant five-year tenure. Fergusson, renowned for overseeing four major releases, announced his departure on social media, expressing gratitude for what’s been accomplished and excitement for future endeavors. He emphasized that the Diablo teams are well-prepped for upcoming projects, hinting at a bright future for the popular series.

While Fergusson didn’t elaborate on his reasons for leaving, Blizzard President Johanna Faries showered him with praise, highlighting his exceptional talent and vision. Xbox Studios’ Phil Spencer also acknowledged Fergusson’s impactful contributions, reminiscing about their time working on Diablo IV together.

Fergusson joined Blizzard in February 2020, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his previous work on the Gears of War franchise. He played pivotal roles in developing Gears 5 and the mobile spin-off, Gears Pop. His reputation as a “closer” of ambitious projects was further evidenced by his involvement in Bioshock Infinite.

During his time at Blizzard, Fergusson led four major launches: Diablo 2: Resurrected, the successful mobile game Diablo Immortal, Diablo IV, which achieved remarkable sales, and the Diablo IV expansion, Vessel of Hatred, introducing new features to the game.

Fergusson’s exit comes at a noteworthy time for Blizzard, amid controversies over AI-generated art and widespread layoffs at Microsoft, which owns Blizzard. His departure leaves a noticeable gap, but his legacy is sure to influence the franchise’s path ahead.
