Qualcomm is gearing up to shake the ARM notebook market with some exciting new releases aimed at expanding its reach into more budget-friendly devices. While the Snapdragon X Elite chipsets catch the eye, Qualcomm is also planning to introduce new tiers that promise to deliver cost-effective options rivaling Apple’s stronghold over this segment.

Christiano Amon, Qualcomm’s CEO, has hinted that by next year, consumers might find Windows-powered devices with Snapdragon SoCs priced as low as $700. What adds to the excitement is the unveiling of an all-new silicon expected to appear in entry-level devices priced around $600.

Although details about this mysterious Snapdragon X chipset are still under wraps, speculation suggests that a 6-core CPU configuration might feature, enabling a reduction in costs without stripping away performance too dramatically. Previous launches have seen Qualcomm balance between performance and price with 12-core, 10-core, and 8-core CPUs. The latest chipset could be an innovative move to capture the attention of price-sensitive buyers who need sufficient computing power for everyday tasks.

Apple has long dominated this niche with its MacBook range flaunting powerful custom chipsets. Currently, the most affordable Apple portable Mac featuring their proprietary Apple Silicon is the M2 MacBook Air, usually priced around $799. Qualcomm, however, aims to challenge this by ensuring that developers can create native applications compatible with Snapdragon, attempting to clear a hurdle that Apple has already jumped with ease.

Anticipation builds around Qualcomm’s rumored 6-core CPU chipset, which might offer competitive multi-core performance, ideally matching Apple’s M1 standards. Devices in this category will likely come equipped with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Though limited RAM might pose constraints in certain scenarios, especially if soldered, Qualcomm’s strategy targets maximizing value within this affordable range.

But Qualcomm’s ambitions don’t stop there. Looking further into the future, the company is working on its third-generation Oryon cores, slated to appear in a future Snapdragon X SoC by 2025. Known under the codename ‘Project Glymur,’ there is even talk of variants sporting an impressive 18-core CPU with full DX12 support, paving the way for enhanced graphics capabilities including hardware-accelerated ray tracing.
