Philips Hue has expanded its refreshed smart light strip lineup in Europe with a more affordable option: the Philips Hue Essential Light Strip. Positioned as the entry-level model in the brand’s newest strip light range, this product is designed for shoppers who want Hue’s signature app-controlled lighting experience at a lower price point.
After debuting in the US, the 5 m (16 ft) Philips Hue Essential Light Strip is now showing up at select European retailers. In Germany, for example, it’s listed at OBI with a price tag of €59.99, making it one of the more budget-friendly ways to add colorful smart accent lighting to a room.
Despite being the “Essential” model, it still delivers both white and colored lighting effects. The strip covers a wide color temperature range from 2,200 K to 6,500 K, letting you switch from warm, cozy tones to brighter daylight-style whites. Through the Philips Hue app, you can also pick from a variety of preset lighting scenes built for different moods and seasonal or holiday themes, which is ideal for quick ambience changes without having to manually tweak colors and brightness.
The light strip is dimmable and the LEDs are rated for an estimated 15,000 hours of use. For people building a more connected smart home, pairing the strip with a Hue Bridge unlocks additional features and broader smart home compatibility, including Matter support for easier integration across platforms.
There are a few trade-offs compared to other Philips Hue light strips in the latest range. The Essential Light Strip reportedly only dims down to 2%, while the higher-end models can drop as low as 0.2% for a softer low-light glow. It also uses less advanced color blending, which may be noticeable if you’re comparing it directly with more premium gradient-style strips.
In terms of installation flexibility, the Philips Hue Essential Light Strip cannot be extended, but it can be cut to fit your setup, making it easier to tailor for shelves, desks, under-cabinet lighting, or TV backlighting.
As of now, it’s not clear when the Philips Hue Essential Light Strip will receive a full official rollout across more European markets, including countries like the Netherlands and Spain, and even broader availability within Germany. For shoppers who have been waiting for a cheaper Philips Hue light strip in Europe, though, early listings suggest it’s already starting to land.
