New details are surfacing about NVIDIA’s much-discussed financing plans involving OpenAI, and they suggest the headline number many people latched onto doesn’t reflect what NVIDIA is actually set to commit right away.

NVIDIA has previously indicated it could invest up to $100 billion into OpenAI, positioning the move as a major vote of confidence in the frontier AI lab and its future direction. Reports suggest OpenAI has been exploring alternatives due to concerns around latency with NVIDIA’s stack, showing interest in approaches that emphasize SRAM-centric designs—an area where rivals such as Groq and Cerebras have been pushing hard. Even if NVIDIA publicly welcomes competition, the prospect of a cornerstone AI partner shifting part of its infrastructure strategy elsewhere adds pressure, and may help explain why NVIDIA appears eager to lock in a deeper financial and strategic partnership.

In other words, this isn’t only about who owns what percentage of an AI lab. It’s also about who supplies the compute that powers the next wave of AI models—and who gets to define the performance, economics, and roadmap of the infrastructure beneath them.
