It looks like NVIDIA is gearing up to sunset its flagship GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D GPUs as it prepares for the next-generation of high-performance graphics cards.
NVIDIA plans to discontinue these top-tier GPUs in October, with supply shortages expected to follow in November, just before the anticipated arrival of the RTX 5090 and 5090D models. Launched nearly two years ago in October 2022, the GeForce RTX 4090 has held its ground as the leader in gaming performance throughout its lifecycle. No card from rival companies has managed to dethrone it.
According to insiders from Chinese Board Channels, NVIDIA and its partners are beginning to phase out production of the GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D starting next month. Although this plan isn’t yet set in stone, October marks the expected beginning of this transition. Retailers should brace for shortages as demand for these high-end GPUs remains strong despite their hefty price tags, which could potentially rise even further.
This move aims to clear out current inventories of GeForce RTX 40 “Ada” GPUs, allowing manufacturers to concentrate on rolling out the next-gen RTX 50 series in the coming months. The GeForce RTX 5090 will replace the RTX 4090 globally, while the RTX 5090D will take over from the RTX 4090D in the Chinese market.
For those eyeing an NVIDIA RTX 4090 or RTX 4090D, it’s important to take note: While not officially confirmed, the discontinuation could start as early as October. Inventory is expected to diminish after November, ahead of the RTX 5090D launch. Those interested in these models should consider purchasing soon to avoid potential stock shortages and price hikes.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 has stood out as a massive performance booster within the RTX 40 lineup, considered by many as the best option available. Although the “SUPER” series brought improved value, it didn’t quite overshadow the original. As things look now, the upcoming RTX 5090 and 5090D might continue this trend of dominance without a significant challenge from AMD and Intel, who are more focused on the mainstream and high-end market segments.
Preliminary reports suggest that the RTX 5090 will be a powerhouse, featuring a substantial 600W TDP and robust design, complemented by cutting-edge GDDR7 memory. Expect more details on the highly-anticipated RTX 50 “Blackwell” GPUs in the coming months.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new chapter in NVIDIA’s journey in the world of high-performance graphics technology.
