Nintendo has successfully reached a new milestone with the sales of its Switch consoles hitting 139.36 million units as of December 31, 2023. With the combined sales of the original Switch, the Switch Lite, and the Switch OLED model, the gaming company has solidified its status as the third best-selling game console globally. The sales have been divided across different regions with the Americas leading at 53.85 million units, followed by Europe’s 36.15 million units, Japan’s impressive 33.34 million, and other regions contributing 16.03 million units in total.
Particularly in Japan, the Switch’s sales overtook the lifetime sales of the Nintendo DS, which had previously sold 32.99 million units. The remarkable performance in the Japanese market saw the Switch become the best-selling console in the country last year.
Despite this success, Nintendo’s latest financial report indicates a declining trend in sales when comparing year-over-year figures—from January to December 2022, the Switch family sold 14.91 million units, but from January to December 2023, sales dropped to 13.74 million units, marking a 7.84% decrease.
The decrease in sales growth could be indicative of the platform’s age. Approaching its seventh anniversary, the Nintendo Switch has had a lengthy period in the market, and there are ongoing speculations about the possible release of a successor console which may be affecting current sales.
Popular game releases have continued to spur console sales. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder proved to be sales powerhouses, with 20.28 million and 11.96 million units sold, respectively, despite their relatively recent launch dates—May 2023 for Tears of the Kingdom and October 2023 for Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
Nintendo observed a 4.7% drop in overall software sales compared to the previous year, although there was a bright spot in the increase in digital sales, which went up by 11.7%.
The company also enjoyed significant growth in its mobile and IP-related business segments. The Super Mario Bros. Movie played a pivotal role in boosting licensed product sales by 93.4% year-over-year.
From a financial perspective, Nintendo remains strong. In the period from March 2023 to December 2023, Nintendo reported a profit of approximately J¥408.041 billion, equivalent to around $2.76 billion, marking a 15% increase from the previous period.
For those interested in experiencing the ongoing success of the Switch, the Nintendo Switch OLED model is available for purchase through various retailers.
