In a surprising twist of events, the gaming world is buzzing with the potential rivalry between Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 and the much-anticipated PlayStation 6. Set for a 2025 release, the Nintendo Switch 2 aims to dominate the market and outpace its competitors in sales, according to a forecast by an analyst from Toyo Securities.
The analyst, Hideki Yasuda, presents an intriguing perspective, suggesting that major consoles like the Nintendo Wii, Switch, DS, as well as Sony’s PS4 and PS5, are seeing a decline in sales. In light of this, Nintendo seems keen on leveraging this slowdown to saturate the market with the new Switch 2, hoping to eclipse the anticipated PS6, which is expected to hit the shelves around 2027 or 2028.
While releasing the Switch 2 outside a major holiday season might seem risky, the potential June launch could prove strategic. The PS5’s sales have not quite matched expectations, leaving a golden window for Nintendo to capture the market with its new console. The long period before the PS6 debut provides Nintendo ample time to build an impressive sales record.
Key to this strategy is ensuring sufficient stock to meet both initial and ongoing demand. Lessons from the PS5 launch, which was hindered by stock shortages, are fresh in industry memory. Fortunately, according to Yasuda, Nintendo’s inventory appears robust, with stock levels increasing significantly over recent quarters.
With a strong inventory in place, it’s anticipated that the Nintendo Switch 2 could achieve sales of up to six million units within its first quarter, potentially exceeding this figure. This momentum could help the console reach or surpass the anticipated 20 million+ unit sales in the first year, positioning it strongly before the PS6 enters the scene.
Interestingly, the real competition for the Switch 2 seems to be against the future PS6 rather than current consoles. With the possibility of consumers tightening budgets, owning multiple gaming systems could become less common. Thus, securing large sales figures before the PS6 launches could propel Nintendo to a dominant position in this competitive market, ensuring its console becomes the centerpiece of gaming setups worldwide.
