Nintendo seems to be gearing up for more cinematic adventures, with films based on their beloved franchises potentially becoming a regular feature in theaters worldwide. At a recent shareholders meeting, the company’s President hinted at exciting future projects. Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a sequel is set to premiere in 2026, with a film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda hitting the big screen in 2027.
While the gaming world has been buzzing about the upcoming Switch 2, Nintendo is clearly setting its sights beyond consoles. During a recent investor meeting, it was revealed that additional Nintendo franchises might soon be heading to the silver screen. An English translation of the 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders shows President Shuntaro Furukawa confirming the timeline for these eagerly anticipated releases. However, when pressed about other possible projects, Furukawa teased, “Although we cannot discuss our plans beyond The Legend of Zelda movie at this time, we are working on various other projects.”
Furukawa emphasized Nintendo’s commitment to maintaining creative control over their films. After acquiring Dynamo Pictures in 2022 and rebranding it as Nintendo Pictures, the company is keen on ensuring their iconic games are celebrated authentically in cinematic form. Legends like Shigeru Miyamoto, the creative genius behind Mario and Zelda, are expected to play a significant role in this process.
Fans and gamers have already begun speculating which of their favorite games could inspire future films. With the anticipated release of Metroid Prime 4 set for 2025, it stands out as a potential candidate for film adaptation. The Donkey Kong Bananza trailers have also caught attention with their unexpectedly cinematic style.
Nintendo’s cautious approach to filmmaking comes after the less-than-stellar 1993 Mario and Luigi film. However, with the recent success of video game-based movies, including Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog, the company seems poised to expand its storytelling into the world of cinema once more.
