Some GeForce RTX 5060 Cards Are Showing Up With 16-Pin Power Connectors, But There’s Little Reason to Worry
A new wave of GeForce RTX 5060 graphics cards has started appearing with an unexpected design choice: a 16-pin power connector. While that might sound unusual for a mid-range GPU, especially one with modest power requirements, the reason appears to come down to reused board designs and a shift in GPU dies.
Most GeForce RTX 5060 models are built around Nvidia’s GB206 GPU die, the chip typically associated with this class of card. However, some newer RTX 5060 variants are now using a cut-down version of the larger GB205 die, which is also used in higher-tier GeForce RTX 5070 graphics cards.
That change has led certain manufacturers to keep PCB layouts originally designed for more powerful 70-class GPUs. As a result, some RTX 5060 cards are arriving with a 16-pin power connector instead of the traditional 8-pin PCIe connector.
Yeston and Maxsun have both been spotted using this design on newer RTX 5060 models. Yeston’s RTX 5060 Gaea and Maxsun’s RTX 5060 i-Craft Cyber Magical Girl edition both appear to feature the 16-pin connector, despite the RTX 5060 not requiring anywhere near the amount of power that connector is designed to handle.
The GeForce RTX 5060 is generally rated around 145W to 150W, depending on the specific model. That is well within the capability of a standard 8-pin PCIe power connector, which is commonly used on graphics cards with much higher power limits. In other words, from a practical standpoint, the RTX 5060 does not need a 16-pin connector.
The reason for the 16-pin connector seems to be linked to the PCB itself. These GB205-based RTX 5060 cards appear to use board designs made for higher-end GPUs. Images and teardown videos show unused traces for an 8-pin connector on the PCB, suggesting the board could have been adapted differently. Instead, the manufacturers kept the 16-pin layout already present on the original design.
Another interesting detail is the GPU package layout. These RTX 5060 models using the GB205 die have a rectangular GPU core mounting design rather than the square layout seen on typical GB206-based RTX 5060 cards. After disassembly, the GPU die is identified as GB205-200-KA-A1.
To make the GB205 die work as an RTX 5060, one memory channel is disabled. This allows the card to maintain the standard 8GB memory configuration over a 128-bit memory bus. Unlike standard GB206-based RTX 5060 cards, these GB205-based versions have four GDDR7 memory chips soldered on one side of the GPU substrate, while additional memory positions remain empty.
For buyers, the presence of a 16-pin connector on an RTX 5060 is more unusual than alarming. Since the card has a relatively low power draw, it is not expected to stress the connector in the same way as higher-end graphics cards with much larger power demands. Still, many PC builders may prefer the simplicity and proven reliability of the classic 8-pin PCIe connector, especially on a GPU that does not benefit from the extra power headroom.
The 16-pin connector on these RTX 5060 models is not necessarily a performance upgrade. It is more likely the result of manufacturers reusing existing GB205 PCB designs to streamline production. That can make sense from a manufacturing standpoint, but it may create confusion for buyers who expect a mid-range RTX 5060 to use a standard 8-pin power plug.
In the end, this design choice should not be a major concern. The RTX 5060 is not a power-hungry graphics card, and the 16-pin connector is unlikely to be pushed anywhere near its limits. However, for many users, the 8-pin connector remains the more practical and reassuring option for a card in this power class.
