MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ price leak suggests Intel’s next gaming handheld will be far from cheap
The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is shaping up to be one of the most powerful Intel-powered gaming handhelds yet, but early retailer listings suggest that performance may come with a steep price tag.
A new listing from Australian retailer Scorptec shows the upcoming MSI handheld starting at AU$2,749 for the standard edition. After conversion, that works out to roughly US$1,959 including GST, or around US$1,780 before tax. A separate Launch Pack edition is listed at AU$2,849, which converts to about US$2,030 with GST, or approximately US$1,846 before tax.
While these prices may still be placeholders, they line up closely with an earlier European retail listing that priced the device at 1,599 euros, or around US$1,854. That makes it increasingly likely that the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ will launch at a much higher price than many handheld gaming PC fans expected.
The biggest attraction of the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is its new Intel hardware. The device is expected to be the first gaming handheld powered by Intel’s Arc G3 Extreme chip, based on the Panther Lake platform. This processor reportedly uses a 2+8+4 core layout and includes integrated graphics said to be comparable to Intel Arc B390-level performance.
If that performance claim holds up, the Claw 8 EX AI+ could become one of the fastest Intel-based handheld gaming PCs on the market. That would place it in a very different category from entry-level handhelds, especially for players looking for stronger integrated graphics, smoother gameplay, and improved multitasking in a compact portable system.
The listed configuration includes 32 GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1 TB SSD, giving the handheld a premium specification sheet right out of the box. These specs are consistent across both the standard edition and the Launch Pack edition.
In terms of design, the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ appears to feature a void-purple finish and an 8-inch display with FHD+ resolution. The screen is listed with a 120 Hz refresh rate, which should help deliver smoother visuals in supported games. The handheld is also expected to include an 80 Wh battery, a notable feature for users who want longer play sessions away from a charger.
The Launch Pack edition does not appear to include any internal hardware upgrades. Instead, it adds a bundle of accessories, including a Claw keychain, tempered glass screen protector, Claw grip caps, and a Travel Case III. Buyers choosing the more expensive bundle are essentially paying extra for protection and convenience rather than better performance.
What makes the leaked pricing especially interesting is how it compares to the existing MSI Claw 8 AI+. That model launched at around $899, meaning the upcoming EX version could cost nearly twice as much if the retail listings are accurate. This would position the new device closer to high-end gaming laptops and premium portable gaming PCs than mainstream handheld consoles.
There are several possible reasons for the higher pricing. The new Intel Panther Lake-based chip is expected to be a major performance upgrade, and the system also ships with a large amount of fast memory and solid-state storage. Broader market conditions may also play a role, as DRAM and SSD prices have been rising, making premium configurations more expensive to produce.
For now, the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ price should be treated with caution until MSI officially announces final availability and regional pricing. Retailer listings ahead of launch can sometimes change, especially when products have not yet been formally released.
Still, if these figures are close to final, the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ will not be competing as a budget handheld. Instead, it looks set to target enthusiasts who want a powerful Intel gaming handheld with a large 120 Hz display, 32 GB of memory, 1 TB of storage, and next-generation integrated graphics.
The big question is whether the performance of the Arc G3 Extreme chip will justify the premium. If MSI can deliver a meaningful leap in handheld gaming performance, the Claw 8 EX AI+ could attract serious attention from portable PC gamers. But at a possible price above $1,500, expectations will be extremely high.
