Minisforum S5 NAS Debuts With Silent Passive Cooling, Five M.2 SSD Slots, and Dual LAN
Minisforum has introduced the S5, a compact network-attached storage system designed for users who want a quiet, space-saving, and energy-efficient storage solution. The biggest highlight of the Minisforum S5 NAS is its fully passive cooling design, which means it operates without fans and produces no system noise during use.
For home offices, creators, small studios, and anyone building a personal cloud storage setup, a silent NAS can be a major advantage. Instead of placing a noisy storage box in another room, the S5 is built to sit comfortably on a desk, shelf, or media cabinet without becoming a distraction.
At the center of the Minisforum S5 is Intel’s Core 3 304 processor. This chip belongs to Intel’s latest entry-level processor lineup and features a 5-core design, made up of one performance core and four low-power efficiency cores. It is not aimed at heavy workstation tasks, but it should be suitable for everyday NAS duties such as file storage, backups, media access, and lightweight server use.
The processor runs at a low 15W power level, which is one of the key reasons Minisforum can use a fanless cooling system. Lower power consumption also makes the S5 more attractive for users who plan to keep their NAS running 24/7.
Storage is where the Minisforum S5 becomes especially interesting. The system includes five M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs using the PCIe 4.0 interface. With five 8TB drives installed, the NAS can support up to 40TB of total storage capacity. That gives users plenty of room for large photo libraries, 4K video projects, system backups, shared work files, and personal media collections.
However, the M.2 slots are said to operate over PCIe 4.0 x1 bandwidth. This means the SSDs may not run at their maximum possible speed compared to full-bandwidth NVMe setups. Even so, for many NAS workloads, especially file sharing, backup storage, and media streaming, the available speed should still be more than enough.
Connectivity is another strong point of the S5. Minisforum has equipped the NAS with dual USB4 ports, each supporting up to 40Gbps bandwidth. These ports make it easier to connect high-speed external drives, docking devices, or other advanced peripherals.
The unit also includes multiple USB Type-A ports for standard accessories and external storage devices. For networking, users get both wired and wireless options. The S5 includes WiFi 7 support for modern wireless connectivity, along with 10GbE and 2.5GbE LAN ports for faster and more stable wired networking.
The inclusion of 10GbE is especially useful for creators and professionals who frequently move large files across a local network. Video editors, photographers, and small teams working with large project folders can benefit from faster transfer speeds when paired with compatible networking hardware.
The Minisforum S5 is housed in a compact aluminum chassis measuring 176.5 x 60 x 154 mm. Its small footprint makes it easy to place in tight spaces, while the metal body helps with heat dissipation in the fanless design. The result is a NAS that focuses on quiet operation, modern connectivity, and high storage potential without taking up much room.
Minisforum has not yet confirmed official pricing or retail availability for the S5. The company is currently offering early access updates for users interested in learning more before launch.
Overall, the Minisforum S5 looks like a promising option for anyone searching for a silent NAS with multiple M.2 SSD slots, low power consumption, WiFi 7, USB4, and fast wired networking. While the entry-level Intel processor and limited PCIe bandwidth may not make it a performance powerhouse, its quiet design and 40TB storage potential could make it a practical choice for home users, content creators, and small office environments.
