Microsoft Word Ends Direct Sending of Word Documents to Kindle Devices

Microsoft is preparing to retire a small but convenient Kindle feature inside Microsoft Word, and it could catch some ebook and productivity fans off guard. Beginning in February 2026, the “Send to Kindle” option that lets you send a Word document straight from Word to your Kindle library with a single click will stop working.

The built-in integration launched in April 2023 for Microsoft 365 users and was designed to make reading and reviewing documents on a Kindle much easier. Instead of saving a file, opening a separate tool, and uploading it manually, Word users could send documents directly to their Kindle in just a moment. It worked with all Kindle models, but it was especially useful for Kindle Scribe owners, since it made it simple to move documents over for reading and handwritten annotations.

Microsoft’s updated support information indicates the feature will be deprecated starting February 9, 2026. The shutdown applies across platforms, including Word on the web, Word for Windows (Win32), and Word for Mac. So regardless of how you use Word, the native “Send to Kindle” button is expected to stop functioning once the change takes effect.

No official reason has been shared by Microsoft or Amazon, but the most likely explanation is straightforward: the feature probably didn’t see widespread use. It arrived quietly, didn’t generate much mainstream attention, and may not have reached enough people to justify ongoing support.

The good news is that sending Word files to a Kindle won’t disappear entirely. You’ll still be able to upload .doc and .docx files using Amazon’s web-based Send to Kindle service, which continues to support multiple formats commonly used for reading and document sharing. Along with Word documents, it supports popular options like EPUB and PDF, plus TXT, RTF, HTML, and several image formats including PNG, JPG, JPEG, and GIF.

If you rely on sending Word documents to your Kindle for distraction-free reading, studying, or markup on a Kindle Scribe, it may be worth planning ahead now. After early February 2026, the workflow changes from a one-click Word integration to a manual upload through Amazon’s Send to Kindle web tool—but your documents can still make it to your Kindle library.
