Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra introduces a magnetic USB-C charger with 140W power
Microsoft is preparing to give the Surface Laptop Ultra a distinctive charging feature: a new magnetic USB-C port designed to work with a 140W magnetic USB-C cable. The idea blends the convenience of magnetic laptop charging with the flexibility of USB-C, creating a charging setup that feels familiar but still stands out in the Windows laptop market.
The magnetic cable attaches to the Surface Laptop Ultra with a quick snap, similar to the experience many users associate with older magnetic laptop chargers. Instead of carefully lining up a standard USB-C plug, users can bring the connector close to the port and let the magnets guide it into place. It is a small quality-of-life upgrade, but one that could make daily charging easier, especially for users who frequently plug and unplug their laptop.
This feature is expected to debut exclusively on the Surface Laptop Ultra. That exclusivity appears to be part of Microsoft’s strategy to help the device stand apart from other upcoming Nvidia Spark laptops from brands such as MSI, Asus, Lenovo, and more. With many high-performance laptops sharing similar chips, displays, and connectivity options, a unique charging system could give the Surface Laptop Ultra a more memorable identity.
The 140W rating also suggests that Microsoft is targeting users who need strong charging performance. A higher-wattage USB-C charger can be especially useful for premium laptops designed for demanding workloads, multitasking, creative apps, and AI-focused tasks. For Surface users, this could mean faster and more reliable charging without giving up the convenience of a magnetic connection.
However, the new magnetic USB-C charger does come with important limitations.
While the magnetic USB-C port on the Surface Laptop Ultra is described as universal, the magnetic USB-C cable itself is not a standard USB-C cable. Its connector is slightly thicker than a typical USB-C plug, which means it will not work with regular USB-C devices such as smartphones, tablets, or other laptops.
In other words, the Surface Laptop Ultra should still be able to use standard USB-C accessories through its port, but the special magnetic charging cable is made specifically for this new magnetic design. Users should not expect to carry the magnetic cable around as a universal charger for every USB-C device they own.
Microsoft has indicated that this magnetic USB-C technology could appear on future PCs, but there are no confirmed details yet. If the system proves reliable and popular, it could eventually become a broader feature across more Windows laptops.
For now, the Surface Laptop Ultra’s magnetic USB-C charging system looks like a practical upgrade with a premium feel. It may not reinvent laptop charging, but it brings back the convenience of a snap-on magnetic connector while keeping USB-C at the center of the experience. For users interested in the next generation of Surface laptops, this could be one of the device’s most useful everyday features.
