MediaTek Clinches Partnerships with Almost All Android Brands, Excluding Google

In the fiercely competitive landscape of Android chipsets, MediaTek has made a remarkable stride by securing collaborations with virtually all Android device manufacturers, with the single holdout being Google. Renowned for their mid-tier and budget-friendly Helio processors, MediaTek has now shifted its focus towards premium, 5G-capable chips to broaden its market presence.

MediaTek’s Expansive Partnerships Span the Android Ecosystem, Bar Google

Previous industry skepticism about MediaTek’s capacity to challenge Qualcomm’s dominance in the premium segment is diminishing. The Economic Times signals MediaTek’s resurgence with their arsenal of 15 chipset variants designed for Android brands. This comprehensive range signifies MediaTek’s determination to contend with Qualcomm in the higher echelons of pricing.

MediaTek India’s Managing Director, Anku Jain, mentions that household names such as Samsung and emergent brands like Nothing are among their collaborators, leaving Google as the notable non-participant. Google is in the midst of developing the Tensor G4 chipset, a likely centerpiece for its upcoming Pixel 9 series. Despite Google’s absence from their partnership portfolio, MediaTek remains undeterred in its goal to usurp Qualcomm.

MediaTek’s performance in the first quarter of the year has already demonstrated its potential, with shipment volumes surpassing those of Qualcomm. Additionally, the anticipation around MediaTek’s impending launch of the Dimensity 9400 Chipset, which is poised to challenge Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, adds to the burgeoning competitiveness.

Qualcomm’s Potential Price Hike Could Advantage MediaTek

Recent rumors hint at a possible price increase by Qualcomm for its upcoming new chipset, which could potentially grant MediaTek an opportunity to leap ahead in the market race with their Dimensity 9400 Chipset. Scheduled for release later in the year, this chipset could potentially present a more cost-effective alternative to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.

An analysis by Morgan Stanley projects that approximately 35% of the global smartphone chipset market could be powered by MediaTek by 2024. This forecast marks a challenging period ahead for Qualcomm, as MediaTek’s momentum could prompt a strategic reassessment for the current industry leader.
