Fallout: New California Is Now Easier Than Ever to Play Thanks to GOG’s One-Click Install
Fallout: New Vegas fans have a great reason to return to the Mojave era. Fallout: New California, one of the most ambitious fan-made total conversion mods ever created for Fallout: New Vegas, is now available on GOG as a free one-click installation for Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition.
Originally released in public beta in 2018, Fallout: New California serves as a large-scale prequel to Fallout: New Vegas. Until now, installing it could be a hassle for many players, requiring manual downloads, file management, and the usual trial-and-error that often comes with major PC mods. With GOG’s new one-click setup, the process is far simpler: install the game, add the mod, and start playing.
For players who do not already own the game, Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition is also discounted on GOG for $7.99 until August 14, 2026. The Ultimate Edition is required to run Fallout: New California, and this version includes the full base game along with its official expansions.
Fallout: New California is not a small add-on or a simple quest pack. It is a full standalone campaign with a new story, a fresh setting, original characters, and an entirely new map. The adventure begins inside Vault 18 before opening up into the dangerous wasteland of New California.
Players take on the role of the kid from Vault 18, a character described as an orphan, a loner, and a mutant. The story begins during the final big night of the Vault Ball season in 2260, when one life-changing decision sets the player on a path that could shape the future of the New California Republic.
The mod offers a large-scale conflict involving several major factions, including the NCR, Enclave, Raiders, and Super Mutants. It also includes studio-quality voice acting, a dynamic radio system, and eight unique companions who can join players throughout the campaign.
Fallout: New California has an impressive development history. The project began in 2011 under the name Fallout: Project Brazil before being renamed Fallout: New California in 2017. After nearly seven years of development, the public beta launched on October 23, 2018. Now, years later, the mod has become far more accessible through GOG’s simplified installation system.
The biggest benefit of this release is convenience. GOG’s one-click version is designed to work smoothly with Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition and comes prepared for major total conversion mods. That means players no longer need to manually move files into game folders or troubleshoot a complicated installation just to get started.
To play Fallout: New California, you will need Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition, 8 GB of RAM, and around 20 GB of additional storage space for the mod.
For longtime Fallout fans, this is one of the best opportunities to experience a massive fan-made story that expands the world of Fallout: New Vegas in a meaningful way. For newcomers, it is a convenient entry point into one of the most respected total conversion mods in the Fallout community.
