Bethesda Confirms Fallout 5, Fallout 3 and New Vegas Remasters, and More Franchise Plans
Bethesda Game Studios has finally given Fallout fans a clearer look at what lies ahead for the legendary post-apocalyptic RPG series. The studio has confirmed that Fallout 5 is officially moving forward, while remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are also in development.
Although the news is exciting, players should not expect Fallout 5 anytime soon. Bethesda studio director Todd Howard described the next mainline Fallout game as a long-term goal, saying that “Fallout 5 remains our long-range destination.” That means the project is now part of Bethesda’s future roadmap, but the studio is not ready to reveal a release window, gameplay details, setting, or full production timeline.
For now, Bethesda says Fallout is one of its biggest priorities, with several projects currently in active development across the franchise.
One of the biggest announcements is that Bethesda has been working on remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. Both games remain fan favorites, and demand for updated versions has been strong for years. Bethesda has not announced release dates for either remaster, and it has not explained how much the games will be improved. Fans are still waiting to learn whether these will be simple visual upgrades or more extensive remasters with gameplay refinements, modern controls, improved performance, and expanded technical features.
The return of Fallout: New Vegas is especially interesting because Obsidian Entertainment is also involved in an unannounced Fallout project. Obsidian originally developed New Vegas, which is still widely considered one of the best entries in the series thanks to its strong writing, faction choices, and role-playing depth. Bethesda has not shared details about this mystery project, but Obsidian’s involvement is already generating major interest among longtime Fallout players.
Fallout 76 is also getting a major new expansion titled Raven Rock. Planned for 2027, Raven Rock will act as a prequel story to Fallout 3, giving players another reason to return to Appalachia. Fallout 76 has received nearly 70 free updates since launch and continues to attract millions of players. Bethesda says the online RPG still has a long future ahead, with new content continuing to expand its world.
Native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of Fallout 76 are also being tested. These upgraded versions are expected to bring better visuals and improved performance, making the game feel more modern on current-generation consoles.
Fallout 4 remains another major success for Bethesda. The game recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary and has now sold more than 35 million copies. Despite being released years ago, Fallout 4 continues to bring in new players, helped by renewed interest in the franchise and its large modding community.
Fallout Shelter is also still going strong. Bethesda says the mobile game has reached more than 250 million players, making it one of the most accessible ways to experience the Fallout universe. More content is planned for Fallout Shelter, including new seasons. An unscripted Fallout Shelter television project is also in development with Amazon Studios and Kilter Films.
The Fallout television series has also become a major part of the franchise’s recent success. Bethesda congratulated Amazon Studios and Kilter Films on receiving 10 Emmy nominations for Fallout Season 2, while confirming that production on Season 3 is already underway.
Bethesda will not host a traditional Fallout Day broadcast this year, but the studio is already preparing something much bigger for the franchise’s 30th anniversary. A special Fallout Day celebration is planned for October 23, 2027, and it will take place live in Washington, D.C. This event could become the next major opportunity for Bethesda to reveal more about Fallout 5, the Fallout 3 remaster, the Fallout: New Vegas remaster, and Obsidian’s secret project.
For now, the future of Fallout looks busier than it has in years. Fallout 5 may still be far away, but with classic remasters, a major Fallout 76 expansion, new television projects, and Obsidian’s return to the franchise, Bethesda is clearly preparing a major new era for the wasteland.
