Lenovo Legion 7i Owner Claims Premium Care Repair Left RTX 4090 Laptop Unusable After Liquid Metal Service
A Lenovo Legion 7i owner says his high-end gaming laptop was left unusable after being serviced for thermal problems, raising fresh concerns about the risks of liquid metal cooling in powerful gaming notebooks.
The laptop in question was reportedly a top-tier Lenovo Legion 7i configured with an Intel Core i9-14900HX processor and a fully powered NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 laptop GPU. For many gamers and creators, that kind of hardware represents a serious investment. But according to the owner’s account on Reddit, the machine began having major issues after being handled by Lenovo Premium Care.
Liquid metal is often used in performance laptops because it can transfer heat more effectively than traditional thermal paste. In theory, that means lower temperatures, better sustained performance, and less thermal throttling. However, liquid metal also comes with one major drawback: it is electrically conductive. If it escapes the area where it is supposed to sit, it can damage nearby components and potentially short the motherboard.
That risk becomes even more serious in a gaming laptop. Unlike a desktop PC or a console that usually stays in one place, laptops are carried in bags, tilted, moved around, and used in many different positions. If the liquid metal is not applied or contained properly, movement can increase the chance of it spreading beyond the CPU or GPU area.
According to the owner, the Legion 7i was sent in for service due to thermal issues. After reassembly, the laptop reportedly became stuck at the Legion logo. Later, it became unusable. While the post does not clearly confirm whether liquid metal leaked across the motherboard, the symptoms described suggest that something may have gone seriously wrong during or after the repair process.
The customer also says Lenovo Premium Care attempted two additional repairs, including work involving the heatsink and motherboard, but neither attempt fixed the laptop. Instead of receiving a working device, the owner claims he was left with an expensive machine that no longer functioned.
The situation became even more frustrating when the customer tried to seek a refund or replacement. According to the Reddit post, Lenovo allegedly refused to provide either option. The owner says he was directed to the third-party retailer in the UAE where the laptop was purchased, Sharaf DG. However, the retailer reportedly declined to issue a refund, arguing that Lenovo’s service process caused the problem.
Sharaf DG is said to have offered store credit equal to the original purchase price. While that may sound reasonable at first, the customer explained that the store credit is restricted and not enough to purchase an equivalent replacement laptop with similar specifications. With premium gaming laptops becoming increasingly expensive, replacing an RTX 4090 laptop is not simple or cheap.
Another concern is the extended Lenovo Premium Care warranty. The owner says he paid extra for coverage that remains valid until August 31, 2028. If the laptop cannot be repaired and no proper replacement or refund is provided, that paid warranty becomes another unresolved part of the dispute.
Many users commenting on the case suggested that the customer should escalate the complaint to Dubai Consumer Rights. Their argument is straightforward: if the laptop was working before the repair and failed after being serviced, the repair provider should take responsibility.
This case also highlights a broader issue in the gaming laptop industry. Liquid metal can deliver excellent cooling performance, especially in thin and powerful machines, but it is much harder to apply safely than standard thermal paste. A small mistake in application, sealing, or reassembly can create expensive damage. For a laptop running a Core i9-14900HX and RTX 4090, even a minor service error can become a major financial problem.
For users who maintain their own laptops, safer alternatives may be worth considering. Phase-change thermal pads such as PTM7950 are popular among enthusiasts because they offer strong thermal performance without the same spill risk as liquid metal. Thermal putty can also be used for VRAM, VRMs, and other components that contact the heatsink. These options may not always match liquid metal in peak thermal transfer, but they are generally easier and safer to work with.
The Lenovo Legion 7i is designed to be a premium gaming laptop, and customers who buy models with RTX 4090 graphics expect high performance, strong reliability, and dependable support. When a repair involving advanced thermal materials goes wrong, the outcome can be devastating for the owner.
For now, the case remains based on the customer’s public account, but it serves as a warning for gaming laptop owners: liquid metal cooling can be powerful, but it is not without risk. Anyone sending a laptop in for thermal service should document the device’s condition beforehand, keep all service records, and make sure warranty responsibilities are clearly understood before work begins.
