The tech world is eagerly anticipating the arrival of AMD’s latest computing innovation, with reports suggesting that the next-generation Ryzen CPUs, based on the “Zen 5” architecture, could hit the shelves as early as August. The Ryzen “Zen 5” CPUs, designed to enhance both processing power and graphics performance, are likely to make their debut on the AM5 socket platform, aligning with the arrival of AMD’s Strix APUs. These APUs (Accelerated Processing Units) combine CPUs and GPUs on a single chip, and are specifically crafted to cater to Mini PCs, which rely on mobile chips rather than those used in traditional desktops. The Strix variants boast advanced features, including Zen 5 cores and a new RDNA 3+ integrated GPU architecture, as well as the XDNA 2 AI Neural Processing Unit, which promises to deliver three times the computing capabilities of its predecessor, Hawk Point, at approximately 45 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second).
The Strix APUs are set to be available in two models—the standard monolithic design with 12 CPU cores and 16 RDNA 3+ GPU cores, and the high-end Strix Halo chips with up to 16 CPU cores and 40 RDNA 3+ GPU cores. While the Halo range is expected to extend its reach into the market by late 2024 or early 2025, the initial batch of AMD Zen 5 Mini PCs is anticipated to feature the standard Strix chips.
Mini PC enthusiasts can look forward to AOOSTAR’s release of the first Mini PCs boasting these new Strix chips by around October, marking the beginning of the fourth quarter in 2024. This will present users with compact computing solutions powered by some of the latest technological advancements in the CPU arena.
Motherboard manufacturers are also preparing for the launch by updating their AM5 platforms with the latest AGESA BIOS support. Although branding for these new CPUs might still undergo some tweaks—evidenced by the previous renaming from Ryzen 9000 series—the essence of the products remains promising.
