Kuoe Kyoto Royal Smith 90-006 Brings Vintage Japanese Watch Design and an 80-Hour Miyota Movement
Japanese watchmaking is often associated with industry giants like Seiko, Citizen, and Casio, but the country’s independent watch scene continues to grow with impressive releases from smaller brands. One name gaining more attention is Kuoe Kyoto, a boutique watchmaker founded in 2020 by Kenji Uchimura. Inspired by antique watches he discovered during his university years in London, Uchimura built Kuoe around classic styling, modest proportions, and a distinctly vintage character.
The brand’s newest release, the Royal Smith 90-006 80 hrs collection, continues that direction with a refined lineup of automatic watches inspired by mid-century dress watch design. Now available for pre-order, the collection starts at $1,150, with the first allocation limited to 1,000 pieces. Deliveries are expected to begin in batches from February 2027.
The new Royal Smith collection is offered in two case sizes: 35mm and 39mm. Both options are made from stainless steel and come with a choice of ivory, blue, or green dials. These sizes give buyers the option of a more traditionally compact vintage feel or a slightly more contemporary wrist presence while keeping the elegant proportions that define the collection.
Visually, the Royal Smith 90-006 leans into understated sophistication. The polished case, rounded bezel, and gently curved lugs give the watch a soft, timeless look. Paired with Italian-made leather straps, the design feels dressy without becoming overly formal, making it suitable for daily wear as well as more refined occasions.
One of the standout details is the dial construction. Kuoe Kyoto uses a two-layer dial with a circular-brushed outer section and a slightly recessed semi-matte center. This creates depth without making the watch look busy. The effect is especially noticeable on the turquoise-blue and forest-green versions, where the changing light adds extra character to the dial.
For the first time in a Kuoe watch, the Royal Smith features applied Roman numeral hour markers. These are matched with polished dot markers, a finely printed minute track, and traditional plume-shaped hour and minute hands. A circular date window at 3 o’clock adds practicality while keeping the vintage-inspired layout balanced.
The biggest upgrade, however, is inside the watch. The Royal Smith 90-006 80 hrs is powered by the new Miyota Caliber 9085 automatic movement. This movement offers an 80-hour power reserve, a major improvement over the 42-hour reserve found in the previous Royal Smith model using the Miyota 9039.
That longer power reserve makes the watch more convenient for collectors who rotate between multiple timepieces. You can set it down for a couple of days and return to it without immediately needing to reset the time, which is a meaningful everyday benefit for mechanical watch owners.
Kuoe also gives the movement some visual appeal through a sapphire exhibition caseback. The rotor is decorated with Geneva stripes, while heat-blued screws add a traditional watchmaking touch. It is a thoughtful detail that makes the watch more enjoyable for anyone who appreciates mechanical movements.
With its compact case options, vintage Roman numeral dial, elegant finishing, and upgraded 80-hour movement, the Kuoe Kyoto Royal Smith 90-006 80 hrs is a compelling release in the world of Japanese microbrand watches. It blends old-world design charm with modern mechanical performance, offering collectors something distinctive beyond the usual mainstream names.
