Grand Seiko SBGA531 debuts as a Ginza-exclusive Spring Drive watch inspired by Wako’s flagship boutique
Grand Seiko has introduced the SBGA531, a new Japan-exclusive limited-edition watch created for Wako, the landmark department store in Tokyo’s Ginza district. Limited to just 150 individually numbered pieces, this refined Heritage Collection model draws its personality from an unexpected source: the interior design of the Grand Seiko Flagship Boutique located inside Wako itself.
The new Grand Seiko SBGA531 follows the earlier SBGA519, a 100-piece ivory-dial Wako exclusive released in May. While that model celebrated a softer, more classic look, the SBGA531 takes a moodier and more architectural approach. Its textured charcoal-gray dial is inspired by the custom Mino ware tiled pillars found in the boutique’s second-floor lounge, capturing the way light and shadow shift across their surface.
That boutique-inspired dial is the centerpiece of the watch. The gray texture gives the SBGA531 a distinctive depth, while navy-blue accents add a subtle modern touch. A navy vapor-deposition ring frames the inner edge of the sapphire crystal, creating a striking visual border. The blue power reserve indicator near eight o’clock adds another point of contrast, while the gold-toned applied GS logo beneath twelve o’clock brings warmth to the otherwise cool color palette.
The SBGA531 uses a 40mm stainless steel case that reinterprets the iconic 44GS design, one of the foundations of the brand’s recognizable “Grand Seiko Style.” As expected, the case features the company’s signature Zaratsu polishing, producing mirror-like surfaces that remain smooth, crisp, and distortion-free. These polished facets are paired with fine brushed areas, giving the watch the sharp contrast and high-end finishing collectors expect from Grand Seiko.
Around the back, the sapphire exhibition case back includes a gold Grand Seiko lion emblem, a “WAKO LIMITED COLLECTION” inscription, and an individual serial number. This detail reinforces the watch’s boutique-only character and makes each of the 150 pieces feel more personal.
Powering the SBGA531 is the Grand Seiko Caliber 9R65 Spring Drive movement. This automatic movement with manual winding offers a 72-hour power reserve and an accuracy rating of ±15 seconds per month, or approximately ±1 second per day. Spring Drive technology combines a traditional mainspring with an advanced quartz-regulated system, allowing the watch to deliver mechanical-watch charm with exceptional precision. One of its most admired traits is the seconds hand, which glides smoothly across the dial rather than ticking.
The watch comes on a stainless steel bracelet and is also supplied with a champagne-brown crocodile leather strap featuring a navy cowhide underside. This pairing gives the SBGA531 versatility, allowing it to shift from a sportier steel-bracelet look to a warmer and dressier leather-strap appearance.
The Grand Seiko Heritage Collection SBGA531 Wako Limited Edition is priced at ¥869,000, approximately $5,655. It will be sold exclusively at the Grand Seiko Flagship Boutique in Ginza starting October 8, with reservations beginning September 10. Reservations are available in person only, making this release especially appealing to collectors who can visit Japan.
