Grand Seiko Unveils a Limited-Edition Timepiece Powered by the 9R65 Spring Drive Caliber

Grand Seiko is marking a major milestone in Japan with a new limited-edition Spring Drive release: the SBGA519. Created to celebrate 40 years of Wako-exclusive Grand Seiko models, this special edition is capped at just 100 pieces and will be sold exclusively through the Wako main store in Ginza. The watch is scheduled to launch in Japan on June 4, making it one of the more tightly controlled releases of the year for collectors who focus on Japan-only editions.

The SBGA519 draws clear inspiration from a beloved Wako-exclusive Grand Seiko first released in 2005. Instead of leaning into the brand’s recent trend of bold, highly textured dials, this model goes for a cleaner, more traditional look. The dial is a soft ivory tone, complemented by gold accents around the dial and on the seconds hand. The overall effect is understated but intentionally refined, offering contrast through color and detailing rather than heavy pattern work.

The case follows the iconic 44GS-inspired design in stainless steel, a shape that has become a cornerstone of Grand Seiko’s modern identity. It measures 40 mm in diameter and 12.5 mm thick, giving it a balanced presence that works well as a daily luxury watch while still feeling special enough for a limited anniversary piece.

Inside is Grand Seiko’s 9R65 Spring Drive caliber, a movement known for blending mechanical energy with quartz-regulated precision. It delivers a 72-hour power reserve and an accuracy rating of ±15 seconds per month, roughly equivalent to about ±1 second per day. On the dial, the power reserve indicator sits around the 8 o’clock position, while the date window is placed at 3 o’clock—both familiar, functional elements that keep the watch practical without distracting from the minimalist dial design.

The SBGA519 comes on a stainless steel bracelet, and it also includes a second strap: a navy blue crocodile leather strap with a beige underside. That extra option adds versatility, allowing the watch to shift easily between a more formal look and a sleek everyday style.

According to the Japan listing, the design theme is “The Beauty of Wako,” with the ivory dial and gold detailing intended to echo traditional Japanese aesthetics rather than a more modern, high-contrast approach. It’s a clear nod to heritage and to Wako’s long-running partnership with Grand Seiko—exactly the kind of story collectors tend to value in anniversary editions.

Pricing is set at ¥869,000 (around $5,600 based on current conversion rates). Reservations begin May 8 at the Wako flagship boutique in Ginza, and the process is strictly in-store only. Buyers are limited to one watch each, and full payment is required at the time of reservation, reinforcing how exclusive—and competitive—this release is expected to be.
