Citizen AQ4090-08A Debuts as a 200-Piece Eco-Drive Watch With Hand-Dyed Indigo Washi Dial
Citizen is marking 50 years of its Eco-Drive solar-powered watch technology with another highly collectible release: The Citizen AQ4090-08A, a limited-edition model that combines high-accuracy Japanese watchmaking with traditional hand-dyed washi paper craftsmanship.
Limited to just 200 individually numbered pieces worldwide, the Citizen AQ4090-08A stands out with an indigo washi paper dial inspired by the soft look of morning mist. Each dial is made using a traditional Japanese shibori dyeing method, giving every watch its own one-of-a-kind pattern. No two dials are exactly alike, making this release especially appealing for collectors who value both precision and artistry.
The highlight of the watch is its handcrafted dial. Citizen uses white washi paper, wraps it around a tube, ties it with string to create delicate wrinkles, and then repeatedly dips it by hand into natural indigo dye made from fermented leaves. The result is a deep blue surface with subtle mist-like textures, designed to evoke fog moving across a cool early morning landscape.
Beneath the artistic dial, the AQ4090-08A is powered by Citizen’s premium Caliber A060 Eco-Drive movement. This solar-powered movement is known for its exceptional accuracy of ±5 seconds per year, placing it among the most precise quartz movements available. Because it uses Eco-Drive technology, the watch charges through light and does not require regular battery replacements.
The Caliber A060 also includes a long list of practical features. It has a perpetual calendar programmed through February 2100, automatic hand correction, magnetic resistance, instant date change at midnight, a power reserve of up to 1.5 years in power-save mode, and protection systems such as impact detection and a hand-lock function to help safeguard the mechanism.
The case measures 40mm wide and 12.2mm thick, giving the watch a refined yet wearable profile. Citizen uses its proprietary Super Titanium material, which is lighter than stainless steel while offering strong durability. The case is finished with a Duratect Platinum coating for added scratch resistance and a bright, premium appearance.
Protecting the dial is a dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective Clarity Coating, designed to improve visibility while maintaining a polished look. The watch also offers 10 ATM water resistance, equivalent to 100 meters, making it suitable for everyday wear.
Unlike some previous washi dial anniversary models that came with metal bracelets, the AQ4090-08A is paired with a black crocodile leather strap and a tri-fold push-button clasp. This gives the limited-edition watch a dressier, more elegant personality, making it well suited for formal wear while still retaining the technical strength expected from The Citizen collection.
Special details reinforce its collectible status. The gold-colored eagle emblem appears on both the dial and caseback, a signature element reserved for select models in The Citizen lineup. Each caseback is individually numbered, confirming its place within the 200-piece global production run.
The Citizen AQ4090-08A is scheduled to launch in August in the United States and Japan. Pricing is set at $3,000, or ¥440,000 in Japan.
