Citizen Unveils Two Limited-Edition “The Citizen” Titanium Watches With Hand-Made Washi Paper Dials
Citizen has introduced two striking limited-edition models in its premium “The Citizen” collection, bringing together traditional Japanese craftsmanship, high-accuracy timekeeping, and refined titanium watchmaking. The new AQ4100-65X and AQ4106-00B are scheduled for release in October, with prices expected to be around $3,000 and $3,100 respectively.
Both watches stand out for their hand-made Tosa washi paper dials, created by artisans in Kochi Prefecture, Japan. This traditional paper is not just decorative. Its translucent quality allows light to pass through the dial and reach the Eco-Drive movement underneath, helping power the watch without the need for regular battery changes.
Citizen has used washi paper dials in “The Citizen” line since 2017, and the appeal remains easy to understand: every dial is unique. Because each sheet of washi is made by hand, the texture, depth, and pattern vary from piece to piece, giving every watch its own individual character.
The AQ4100-65X features a deep red dial made from Tengujoshi, an ultra-thin style of washi paper known for its delicate and refined appearance. The case and bracelet are crafted from Citizen’s Super Titanium and finished with Duratect Platinum, a surface-hardening treatment designed to improve scratch resistance while keeping the watch lightweight.
Gold-colored accents on the eagle emblem and seconds hand add contrast to the rich red dial, creating a warm and luxurious look. These gold details are exclusive to this model, giving the AQ4100-65X an added sense of rarity.
The AQ4106-00B takes a different design approach with an Unryushi washi paper dial. This type of paper includes long fibers introduced during the papermaking process, resulting in soft, cloud-like patterns across the surface. Gold fibers woven into the dial add subtle shimmer and depth, making the watch feel more organic and artistic.
Its case features Citizen’s Duratect Sakura Pink finish, giving the titanium a gentle rose-toned appearance. Instead of a bracelet, this version is paired with a crocodile leather strap sourced from a tannery certified by the Leather Working Group, adding a more classic and dress-oriented feel.
Powering both limited-edition watches is Citizen’s Eco-Drive Caliber A060. This light-powered movement is one of the key highlights of the models, offering impressive accuracy of plus or minus five seconds per year. That makes these watches far more precise than standard quartz timepieces and places them among Citizen’s most accurate wristwatches.
On a full charge, the movement can run for up to 18 months in power-save mode. The Caliber A060 also includes a perpetual calendar programmed until February 28, 2100, along with an instant date-change mechanism that switches the date cleanly at midnight.
Citizen has also equipped the movement with practical durability features, including impact detection with a lock function and automatic hand correction. If the hands are shifted out of position due to a shock or magnetic interference, the watch can automatically realign them to maintain accurate time display.
With their combination of hand-crafted Japanese washi dials, lightweight titanium construction, Eco-Drive technology, and ultra-precise annual accuracy, the AQ4100-65X and AQ4106-00B show Citizen’s ability to blend tradition and modern engineering in a distinctive way.
The red-dial AQ4100-65X is currently listed in the United States at close to $3,000, while both models are expected to launch in October. Given their limited-edition status and unique handmade dials, these watches are likely to appeal to collectors looking for something more personal than a conventional luxury timepiece.
