Intel Arrow Lake-S Desktop CPU Refresh Reportedly Canceled, Nova Lake To Replace Core Ultra 200 1

Introducing the LGA 1851 & 800-Series Motherboard Platforms

Intel’s upcoming Arrow Lake-S Refresh CPUs, the “Core Ultra Series 2,” have been confirmed to work with existing LGA 1851 socketed motherboards. Recent leaks, including a detailed block diagram of a W880 motherboard, highlight support for both these Arrow Lake-S and Arrow Lake-S Refresh chips.

The Arrow Lake Refresh platform will feature two lines: Arrow Lake-S for desktops and Arrow Lake-HX for high-end laptops. Although the refresh isn’t a massive overhaul, improvements are expected in higher clock speeds and perhaps a better neural processing unit (NPU). The current configuration maxes out at 8 Performance Cores (P-Cores) and 16 Efficient Cores (E-Cores), so any new additions to the lineup remain uncertain.

Compatibility is a key advantage of the Intel Arrow Lake-S Refresh CPUs, as they will fit the current LGA 1851 socket and work with existing 800-series motherboards. This will be the final series on the LGA 1851 socket before transitioning to the LGA 1954 sockets designed for the next-gen Nova Lake-S CPUs.

One downside to note is Intel’s shorter platform lifespan compared to AMD, which supports multiple generations with its AM4 and AM5 sockets. On the plus side, you can reuse existing cooling solutions due to unchanged dimensions, but it’s unclear if older coolers will fit with the new integrated heat spreader (IHS) or if new installation kits will be necessary.

In a bid to entice buyers, Intel has slashed prices on its Core Ultra Series 2 CPUs, with models like the Core Ultra 7 265K/KF now available for under $300. These processors offer a solid package, though they’re not leading in gaming performance—a key factor for many PC builders. The anticipated boost from the Core Ultra 200S series has provided only modest improvements.

As Intel continues refining its lineups, tech enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting what the Arrow Lake Refresh will bring to the table. Whether it’s significant performance enhancements or continued compatibility, the upcoming releases could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Intel’s processor offerings.
