India Prepares UPI for the Next Wave: AI Agents That Can Pay on Your Behalf

India is reportedly preparing a major upgrade to its digital payments ecosystem that could allow AI agents to make small payments through UPI without asking users to approve every single transaction.

The move, if finalized, would mark an important step toward agentic commerce, where artificial intelligence tools can complete routine tasks and purchases on behalf of users. Instead of simply recommending actions, AI agents could be authorized to carry out low-value transactions within limits set by the user.

UPI, India’s widely used real-time payments network, has already transformed how people send money, pay merchants, settle bills, and shop online. Adding AI-powered payment capabilities could push the system into a new phase, making everyday digital transactions faster and more automated.

Under the reported framework, users may be able to give AI agents permission to handle small payments without needing manual approval each time. This could be useful for recurring or routine activities such as paying for transport, ordering basic household items, renewing small subscriptions, booking services, or completing low-value online purchases.

The key idea is convenience. Today, even simple digital payments usually require a user to confirm the transaction manually. With AI agents, a person could set preferences and spending limits in advance, allowing the software to act within those boundaries.

For example, an AI assistant could compare prices, choose a suitable option, and complete payment for a small purchase if it matches the user’s instructions. This could reduce friction in online shopping and make digital services feel more seamless.

However, allowing AI systems to move money also raises important questions around security, consent, fraud prevention, and accountability. Any framework for AI payments would likely need strict safeguards, including spending caps, user-defined permissions, transaction tracking, and easy ways to revoke access.

India’s interest in AI agent payments reflects a broader shift in the digital economy. As AI tools become more capable, they are moving beyond chat-based assistance and toward completing real-world actions. Payments are one of the most important pieces of that puzzle.

If India successfully integrates AI agents with UPI, it could become one of the first major markets to support AI-driven transactions at national scale. Given UPI’s massive user base and merchant adoption, the impact could be significant for consumers, fintech companies, banks, online marketplaces, and app developers.

For businesses, AI-enabled payments could open the door to smoother customer journeys and more automated commerce experiences. For users, it could mean fewer steps, quicker checkouts, and smarter financial interactions. But trust will be essential. People will need confidence that AI agents can only spend within clearly approved limits.

The reported plan shows how India’s payment infrastructure continues to evolve. UPI has already become a central part of daily life for millions, and the addition of AI agents could make it even more powerful.

While the framework is still being prepared, the direction is clear: India is exploring a future where digital payments are not only instant, but intelligent.
