Huawei Mate X8 May Outshine the Galaxy Z Fold 8 with a Bigger Display

Huawei appears to be gearing up for another big year in foldable phones, and the next model in its Mate X lineup could be one to watch. Following last year’s Mate X7, rumors now suggest Huawei is preparing a new book-style foldable that may edge out Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 in one key area: screen size.

The latest leak, shared by well-known tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, claims Huawei is working on a foldable with an 8.15-inch inner display and a 6.5-inch cover screen. If accurate, that would make the main display slightly larger than what’s currently seen on Samsung’s Fold series. For example, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is known for an 8-inch main panel paired with a 6.5-inch outer display, and early expectations point to similar sizing for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which is rumored to arrive in July.

While a jump from 8.0 inches to 8.15 inches sounds modest on paper, it could still make the unfolded experience feel roomier—especially for multitasking, reading, and watching videos. The more interesting question is how Huawei might achieve the larger screen. If the company can increase display size by shrinking bezels rather than expanding the phone’s footprint, users could get a bigger view without sacrificing portability.

The leak also hints at internal upgrades. The upcoming foldable—widely assumed to be called the Huawei Mate X8—may use an “Nth generation flagship chip,” which likely points to the Kirin 9040 Pro. That would position it as the successor to the Kirin 9030 Pro found in the Mate X7, potentially bringing better performance and improved efficiency.

On the camera side, the rumor mentions a 50MP main camera using a large 1/1.3-inch sensor. A sensor of that size typically helps with light capture, which can translate to sharper images, improved dynamic range, and stronger low-light results—areas that matter a lot for a premium foldable meant to compete at the top of the market.

As with any early leak, it’s worth taking the details cautiously. Specifications often shift during development, and Huawei hasn’t officially confirmed anything about its next foldable yet. Still, the combination of a slightly larger inner display, a next-gen Kirin chip, and a large main camera sensor suggests Huawei is aiming to push its foldable lineup further into flagship territory.

Adding to the intrigue, Huawei is also rumored to be working on more than one high-end foldable for later this year, including a possible follow-up to its tri-fold device—expected to be the Mate XT 2, or something similar depending on the final name. If those plans materialize, Huawei’s foldable portfolio could become one of the most diverse on the market, covering both traditional book-style designs and more experimental form factors.
