Huawei is ready to make a bold leap, marking its official departure from Google’s Android as it sets sail with its own operating system, HarmonyOS Next. Starting next week, this new software will replace Android on all compatible Huawei devices, both new and existing ones, ushering in a new era for the tech giant’s smartphones and tablets.
The transition to HarmonyOS Next has been in the works for years as Huawei plans to distance itself from Android and establish a truly independent OS. While the prospect of increased software independence is exciting, it’s important to acknowledge that app availability might initially be limited. However, Huawei has promised that HarmonyOS Next will support essential applications and aims to integrate over 10,000 apps, effectively catering to “99.9% of consumers’ usage time needs.”
Originating as a UI overlay on top of Android, HarmonyOS is now transforming into a standalone operating system, exclusively for Huawei devices. The ambition is to rival Android in terms of app diversity and functionality. Reports indicate that HarmonyOS Next will start its rollout on eligible phones next week, marking a significant step away from using Google’s Android as its core operating system.
In China, HarmonyOS claimed an impressive 17 percent market share in the first quarter, demonstrating its growing domestic acceptance. The rollout, scheduled to kick off with devices like the Mate 60, Mate X5, and MatePad Pro, signals Huawei’s determination to carve out its own niche in the operating system market. However, there’s still no confirmation on whether the upcoming Mate XT tri-fold device will be part of this update.
What’s particularly interesting is Huawei’s timing, as they plan to launch HarmonyOS Next on October 15, the rumored release date for Google’s Android 15. This sets the stage for a fascinating matchup. What remains to be seen is whether Huawei’s new OS will introduce features that can challenge the competition, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence, where Android and iOS still hold strong. Keep an eye out for further announcements as the update becomes available.
