Grand Theft Auto V Rolls Out Free Console Upgrades for Xbox and PlayStation

Rockstar Games is making it easier than ever for console players to jump into the latest version of Grand Theft Auto V. Starting June 18, eligible Xbox and PlayStation owners will be able to upgrade to the current-generation version of GTA V for free.

The move is a welcome change for longtime players who originally bought Grand Theft Auto V on older console hardware. When the upgraded edition first launched, console players had to pay a $10 upgrade fee to access the newer version. Now, Rockstar is removing that cost, giving more players a chance to experience GTA V with current-generation improvements without paying extra.

The updated version of Grand Theft Auto V offers a smoother and more polished experience on modern consoles, with enhanced visuals, improved performance, and features designed to take advantage of newer hardware. For players who have been waiting to revisit Los Santos, this free upgrade provides a strong reason to return.

PC players previously received their own enhancements at no additional cost, including advanced visual features such as ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination. With the console upgrade now becoming free, Rockstar is bringing more consistency across platforms and making the upgraded GTA V experience more accessible.

The free current-generation upgrade will arrive alongside a new Grand Theft Auto Online update called the “Kortz Center Heist.” This new content is expected to give GTA Online players fresh missions and another reason to team up, plan big scores, and dive back into the game’s ever-expanding online world.

Grand Theft Auto V remains one of the most successful and widely played games in the industry, and Rockstar continues to support it more than a decade after its original release. By offering the current-generation upgrade for free, the studio is giving existing players a better way to enjoy one of its biggest titles while keeping excitement alive for Grand Theft Auto Online.

For anyone who already owns GTA V on supported Xbox or PlayStation platforms, June 18 is the date to watch. The free upgrade could be the perfect opportunity to return to Los Santos, explore the improved version of the game, and take on the new Kortz Center Heist in GTA Online.
