GoPro is stepping into a new era of action cameras with the launch of the Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro, two fresh models designed around higher-end imaging and more flexible video capture. Both cameras debut GoPro’s new GP3 processor and, for the first time in the brand’s action camera lineup, support 4:3 Open Gate recording—an increasingly popular format for creators who want maximum framing freedom for cropping, reframing, and posting across different social platforms without sacrificing composition.
The headline feature is on the GoPro Mission 1 Pro, which can record up to 8K at 30 frames per second in Open Gate mode. That combination targets users who want the sharpest possible footage while keeping the taller 4:3 canvas for edits, stabilization, and vertical exports. Meanwhile, the standard GoPro Mission 1 still benefits from the new processing platform and Open Gate support, but it’s capped at 4K at 120 FPS. That makes it the better fit for smooth slow-motion moments—think high-speed sports, biking, skateboarding, and any scene where capturing fast action with fluid detail matters most.
Pricing positions these as premium upgrades. The GoPro Mission 1 starts at $599 in the US and €599 in the Eurozone, while UK pricing is listed at £529. The higher-spec GoPro Mission 1 Pro comes in at $699, €699, and £599. GoPro is also bundling both cameras with a 1-year GoPro Premium subscription at no extra cost, adding extra value for buyers who want cloud features and subscription perks from day one.
If you’re planning to buy early, pre-orders are expected to ship on or before May 28. Between the GP3 processor, new Open Gate capture, and the split focus between high-resolution 8K and high-frame-rate 4K slow motion, the Mission 1 series looks aimed squarely at creators who want more control in post-production while still getting the rugged, grab-and-go experience action cameras are known for.
