Google Broadens Search Controls to Help You Erase Sensitive Personal Information Online

Google is using Safer Internet Day to spotlight new privacy and safety improvements in Google Search, making it simpler to find and remove sensitive personal information and to take action against non-consensual explicit imagery.

Expanded “Results about you” removals for sensitive ID numbers

Google’s “Results about you” feature already let people request the removal of Search results that exposed key contact details such as a phone number, email address, or home address. With the latest update, the tool now also supports removal requests tied to highly sensitive identification information, including details like a driver’s license number, passport number, and Social Security number.

This change is designed to help protect users from risks like identity theft, scams, and doxxing by reducing how easily these details can be discovered through Search.

How to use “Results about you” in the Google app

To access the feature, open the Google app, tap your Google account photo, and choose “Results about you.” If you’re using it for the first time, select “Get started,” then enter the personal contact information you want Google to watch for. From there, you’ll be prompted to add government ID numbers so the system can monitor for those as well.

If you’re already an existing user, you can simply add your ID numbers and choose which ones you want monitored.

After you confirm your details, Google will automatically scan Search results and alert you when it detects results that appear to contain your personal information. Google also emphasizes an important point: removing information from Search results doesn’t delete it from the internet entirely, but it can still make a meaningful difference by reducing exposure and improving privacy.

Rollout timing

Google says the updated experience is rolling out across the United States over the coming days, with plans to expand to more regions later.

A simpler way to report non-consensual explicit images in Search

Google is also streamlining how people request the removal of non-consensual explicit images from Search results. Instead of navigating a complicated process, users can now click the three dots on an image, select “remove result,” and then choose the option that indicates the image is a sexual image of them.

Google is also improving efficiency for people facing larger volumes of harmful content. You no longer have to report images one at a time—users can now select multiple images from Search results and submit removal requests in one form. Just as importantly, you can track the status of all your requests in a single place within the “Results about you” hub.

More proactive protection against repeat explicit results

Google says removing content that’s already online is only part of the challenge. As an added safeguard, the updated process includes an opt-in option that can proactively filter additional explicit results that might appear in similar searches in the future. The goal is to help prevent the same kind of harmful imagery from resurfacing again and again.

Overall, these updates make Google Search privacy tools more practical and easier to use, giving users faster ways to protect sensitive personal data and respond to exploitative content.
