Garmin’s Premium Smartwatches Get a Major Upgrade: 12 Powerful New Features Arrive in One Update

Garmin has started rolling out a major new stable firmware update for its premium Tactix 8 smartwatch, bringing a long list of new features, performance tweaks, and bug fixes to users worldwide. The update is arriving as an over-the-air download and marks the end of Garmin’s v21.xx beta cycle for the Tactix 8.

Interestingly, the Tactix 8 isn’t receiving the exact same software build that recently landed on other high-end Garmin watches like the Enduro 3 and Fenix 8 series. Instead of System Software 21.25, the Tactix 8 is getting System Software 21.27. Garmin has confirmed that 21.27 wraps up the v21.xx beta phase, but it hasn’t fully detailed every difference between the two builds—something dedicated users quickly noticed.

From what’s currently known, there are two clear changes that set System Software 21.27 apart. First, it does not include the updated translations found in 21.25. Second, it adds a specific fix for third-party laser rangefinders, resolving an issue that prevented them from accessing ballistics data—an especially relevant improvement for Tactix owners who rely on compatible external gear.

Beyond those differences, the core feature set appears to match what arrived in the similar v21.xx update on Garmin’s other flagship models. That means Tactix 8 owners are getting a bundle of new “glances” (quick-look widgets), expanded customization options, smarter sleep and notification tools, and new training plans geared toward timed workouts, cardio sessions, and optional strength training.

Here’s what’s included in the Tactix 8 System Software 21.27 update, based on the published changelog:
