Garmin Fenix 9 Pro Features Set to Roll Out Across Fenix 8 and More Models

Garmin Fenix 9 and Fenix 9 Pro bring new features to older Garmin watches

Garmin has officially introduced the Fenix 9 and Fenix 9 Pro, its latest flagship multisport smartwatches aimed at athletes, outdoor explorers, and fitness-focused users. The new models arrive with notable hardware upgrades, including a faster processor, 64 GB of storage, and a redesigned titanium case for the Fenix 9 Pro.

However, the biggest news may not be the hardware. This time, many of the most exciting Garmin Fenix 9 features are software-based, and Garmin plans to bring several of them to existing watches through future updates.

That is a welcome change for Garmin users. In previous generations, new training tools and activity features were often tied closely to new watch releases. With the Fenix 9 series, Garmin appears to be taking a more generous approach by extending many software improvements to older compatible devices.

Older Garmin watches expected to receive Fenix 9 features include:

Garmin Fenix 8

Garmin Fenix 8 Pro

Garmin Fenix E

Garmin Tactix 8

Garmin Forerunner 970

Garmin Forerunner 570

Garmin Venu X1

Garmin Venu 5

Garmin Vivoactive 6

The exact feature list will vary depending on the model. Some watches may not support every new function due to hardware limitations or because certain existing features are missing from that device.

For example, the Garmin Forerunner 570 does not currently include Garmin’s Stamina feature, so the new endurance analysis tools are not expected to arrive on that model. Meanwhile, the Garmin Fenix 8 should receive most of the new software additions, although it may miss out on the new battery modes, the upgraded Maps app, and ArcheryX, Garmin’s new archery tracking feature.

One of the standout additions coming to compatible devices is Garmin Epic. This feature lets users combine multi-day activities, photos, and performance data into a single adventure summary inside Garmin Connect. For hikers, cyclists, runners, and outdoor travelers, this could make it easier to relive and share long-distance journeys in a more complete and visually engaging way.

Garmin is also preparing improved endurance analysis tools. These include long-term performance trends and new real-time graphs for running and cycling. For athletes who want deeper insight into their pacing, fatigue, and overall training progress, these updates could make Garmin watches even more useful as daily training companions.

Other planned additions include expanded rucking and indoor rowing activity profiles, inReach weather updates, and a watch face editor that works directly on the watch. That means users will be able to customize watch faces without needing to rely as much on a phone or separate setup process.

Another important detail is that these upcoming features are not expected to require a Garmin Connect+ subscription. That should be reassuring for current Garmin users who want new functionality without paying extra for access.

Garmin has not yet confirmed an exact release date for the software update. Still, the move suggests that owners of recent Garmin smartwatches may get a meaningful feature boost without needing to upgrade immediately to the Fenix 9 or Fenix 9 Pro.

For anyone using a Fenix 8, Tactix 8, Forerunner 970, Venu 5, or another supported model, this update could make an already powerful smartwatch feel fresh again. The Fenix 9 lineup may be Garmin’s newest flagship family, but many of its best software features are set to reach a much wider group of users.
