Garmin is rolling out a fresh beta software update for several of its high-end adventure smartwatches, including the Fenix 8, Fenix E, Enduro 3, and Tactix 8. The new release, labeled beta version 21.18, arrives roughly a week after the previous 21.xx test build and focuses on smoothing out a couple of frustrating issues that some owners have run into during daily use.
One of the key fixes in beta 21.18 targets the Garmin Messenger experience. Users with long message threads have reported noticeable lag when scrolling or interacting with extended conversations, and this update is designed to reduce that slowdown and make messaging feel more responsive.
The other major fix addresses a problem tied to heart rate variability tracking. Specifically, Garmin says the HRV chart could crash when users interacted with it. For anyone relying on HRV trends to monitor recovery, training load, stress, and overall wellness, this bug fix should make the feature far more reliable.
Garmin is distributing beta 21.18 as an over-the-air update, and the company indicates it has reached about half of eligible devices so far. If you don’t see it immediately, it may simply be a staged rollout that will continue expanding until more users receive it.
As with many Garmin beta releases, a few functions are temporarily disabled while the software is in testing. ECG, Dive, and Aviation features won’t be available during the beta period.
Garmin hasn’t confirmed when the finalized stable 21.xx update will be widely released for all users of the Fenix 8, Fenix E, Enduro 3, and Tactix 8. However, expectations are that the stable software will also introduce an additional navigation-related option, letting users turn off guidance prompts until a direction change is imminent—an upgrade that could make turn-by-turn navigation less intrusive during workouts and hikes.
For owners of these Garmin smartwatch models, beta 21.18 is a smaller update, but it’s a meaningful one: improved Messenger performance, a fixed HRV chart crash, and another step toward a more polished 21.xx stable release.
