Garmin’s Flagship Smartwatches Just Got a Huge Upgrade Packed With New Features

Garmin Fenix 8 Pro finally gets major System Software 23.39 update with new features and fixes

Garmin has started rolling out a long-awaited stable software update for its Pro-branded flagship smartwatches, including the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro and Quatix 8 Pro. The update, System Software 23.39, brings a sizeable list of improvements, new tools, and bug fixes after the first 23.xx stable release did not reach every model in the Fenix 8 family.

The rollout follows System Software 23.31, which was previously released for selected Fenix 8 devices but skipped several models at launch. Garmin later moved to System Software 23.39, a newer stable build that addresses remaining issues and adds more functionality. Now, the company has expanded availability to its Pro smartwatches, including the Fenix 8 Pro microLED.

According to Garmin’s rollout status, System Software 23.39 has already reached around half of eligible devices, meaning some users may receive it immediately while others may need to wait a little longer. As usual with Garmin updates, the release appears to be rolling out in phases to ensure stability.

For Garmin Fenix 8 Pro owners, this is a notable upgrade. The update includes 22 changes compared with System Software 22.44, covering new workout options, voice control, music playback improvements, activity tracking fixes, and usability refinements.

One of the biggest additions is support for the “OK Garmin” wake word, enabling voice command functionality directly from the watch. This gives users a more convenient way to interact with their smartwatch without navigating through menus, especially during workouts or outdoor activities.

Garmin has also added a suggested quick workout for running, giving runners a faster way to start guided training. Another new activity profile, XC Ski Indoor, has been added for users who train on indoor cross-country ski machines. For divers, the update adds support for sharing dive computer settings through the Garmin Share app.

The update also improves volume controls by adding more context, which should make audio adjustments clearer and easier to manage. This ties into several audio-related fixes included in System Software 23.39, especially for Spotify playback.

Garmin has fixed an issue that could cause music volume to increase after an alarm sounds. The update also addresses potential Spotify problems, including playback issues after skipping songs with paired Bluetooth headphones and possible shutdowns when switching playlists.

Several workout-related bugs have also been resolved. The update fixes a problem that could cause the device to reset during a free strength workout, as well as a possible shutdown when using the HIIT activity. Garmin has also restored the onscreen lap shortcut in HIIT workouts, which had stopped appearing for some users.

Runners and cyclists should benefit from a fix for pace and speed dropouts, particularly during interval training. Garmin Coach users also get improvements, including a fix for mismatched training days between the watch and the Garmin Coach plan. The update also resolves issues with selecting rest days for daily suggested workouts or Garmin Coach workouts.

Multisport athletes get a fix for a problem that could prevent suggested multisport workouts from starting. Garmin has also corrected an issue that could cause the watch to reset when installing audio prompt software.

There are several smaller but useful refinements as well. The flashlight shortcut has been improved so users can cycle through on, off, and strobe modes during an activity. Touch lock behavior has also been refined to reduce false unlocks, which should help during workouts, water-based activities, or outdoor use.

Another fix restores the correct volume level after water ejection. The update also adds support for Xero range and sensor data in the Applied Ballistics app, along with updated translations and other minor improvements.

Overall, System Software 23.39 is a meaningful update for the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro, Quatix 8 Pro, and other compatible Pro models. With new voice controls, expanded activity support, better training reliability, and fixes for Spotify and workout stability, this release should make Garmin’s premium smartwatches feel more polished and dependable for everyday fitness, outdoor adventures, and advanced sports tracking.
