Garmin Smartwatch Update Introduces a Smarter New Navigation Page Tool

Garmin has started rolling out the first software update for its Approach J1 smartwatch, bringing a handful of practical improvements for families and young golfers. The Approach J1 launched in January 2026 as a kid-friendly golf watch, featuring a bright AMOLED display, built-in GPS, and access to more than 43,000 preloaded golf courses designed to make time on the course easier to navigate.

The new release, System Software Version 8.09, focuses on making on-course guidance clearer. Garmin has updated the tee box navigation page by adding a hole indicator, a small change that can make a big difference when moving between holes—especially for younger users who benefit from simple, visual prompts.

This update also introduces a helpful reminder before a phone is paired. A new message now appears to let users know they can set things up using a child-specific account, reinforcing the Approach J1’s role as a smartwatch built with kids in mind.

Garmin is also addressing a bug tied to the Manage Clubs feature. Some users reported that after pairing the watch with a smartphone, the Manage Clubs option could become hidden unexpectedly. Version 8.09 is intended to resolve that issue so the feature remains accessible as expected.

Alongside these functional updates, Garmin has included refreshed translations, which should improve the overall experience for users in different regions.

System Software Version 8.09 is available for all Garmin Approach J1 units. If you use the Garmin Golf app, the update should install automatically when the watch is paired with your smartphone. You can also initiate the update manually using Garmin Express on a computer.
