Garmin is rolling out a major new software update for several of its premium multisport smartwatches, bringing a long list of new features, useful tweaks, and important bug fixes. If you own a Fenix E, Fenix 8, Enduro 3, or Tactix 8, this is one of the biggest stable updates you’ve seen in months.
The update arrives as System Software 21.25 and replaces the previous stable build (System Software 20.29) for users who haven’t been using Garmin’s beta releases. Garmin began pushing the update without much advance notice, then confirmed the rollout through its official community channels. As of now, the company says the release has reached around 20% of eligible watches, with the rollout expected to ramp up quickly over the next day or two.
What makes System Software 21.25 stand out is the mix of brand-new tools and quality-of-life improvements designed for training, recovery, and everyday use. Garmin says the update adds roughly a dozen new features, including four new “glances” (Garmin’s quick-look widgets) and refreshed training guidance that takes recent dives into account—an especially handy change for users who mix diving with running, cycling, or other endurance training.
New features and upgrades included in System Software 21.25 include:
– A new glance for tracking your favourite sports teams
– A battery-focused glance showing more detailed battery life and performance data
– A weight-tracking glance
– A new glance that helps connect daily behaviours to specific health metrics
– Additional alarm sounds
– A new activity mode that lets you record multiple sports in a row
– Colour filters added to watch settings for improved visibility and personalization
– New sleep glance insights that suggest your ideal bedtime and wake time
– Smart notifications added to the stage menu, with the option to delay notifications until after an activity
– New training plans built around timed workouts, cardio sessions, and optional strength training
– Voice alerts added to watch settings
– Voice alerts when paired with a compatible radar device
On the bug-fix and performance side, Garmin is targeting several frustrating issues that can disrupt workouts or daily use. The update addresses problems tied to music playback during an activity, Wi‑Fi upload reliability, indoor cycling course loading, and workout selection accuracy for Garmin Coach cycling sessions. It also improves pace responsiveness for a more natural feel during runs and saves changes to structured repeats so your next interval workout reflects your adjustments.
Fixes and improvements included in the update:
– Fix for a blank screen that could appear after opening the music player during an activity
– Fix for partial failures that could occur when uploading over Wi‑Fi
– Fix for device resets when loading an indoor cycling course
– Fix for the wrong Garmin Coach cycling workout loading in certain cases
– Fix for Backcountry Ski post-activity summaries not showing max speed or mileage
– Fix for GPS acquisition failing in certain watch apps (noted for Fenix 8 Pro)
– General minor bug fixes
– Improved pace responsiveness
– Structured repeat edits now carry over to the next interval workout
– Updated translations
– Training guidance updated to factor in recent dives
Garmin hasn’t shared a separate, model-specific changelog for the Tactix 8 yet, but it’s expected to receive equivalent improvements as the rollout continues.
If you want to check whether the update is available on your watch, open the watch settings and look for the software update option (availability may vary as the staged rollout expands).
