Framework Laptop 12 refresh brings Intel Core Series 3 chips, Thunderbolt 4, WiFi 7, and a $549 starting price
Framework has updated its compact Laptop 12 lineup with new Intel Core Series 3 processors, giving the repairable and customizable notebook a major efficiency-focused refresh. The latest configurations move away from older Intel 13th-generation options and adopt Intel’s newer Wildcat Lake chips, with the goal of delivering longer battery life, lower noise, and cooler everyday operation.
The refreshed Framework Laptop 12 is aimed at buyers who want an affordable, lightweight laptop without giving up modern connectivity or upgrade-friendly design. Pricing starts at $549, and pre-orders are now open, with the first batch expected to begin shipping in October.
One of the biggest changes is the new processor lineup. The base configuration uses the Intel Core 3 304, which features a 1+4 core design and boost speeds of up to 4.3 GHz. Higher-end options include the Core 5 320 and Core 7 350, both offering a 2+4 core configuration with boost speeds reaching up to 4.6 GHz and 4.8 GHz, depending on the model.
Graphics performance also changes with the new chips. The Core 3 model includes a single Xe3-based integrated GPU core, while the Core 5 and Core 7 versions come with two Xe3 GPU cores. While this is not a gaming-focused laptop, the upgraded integrated graphics should help with smooth video playback, everyday creative tasks, and general productivity.
Battery life appears to be one of the strongest selling points of the new Framework Laptop 12. Framework says the Core 5 320 model delivers up to a 70% improvement in battery life while streaming Netflix in 4K compared with the previous Core i5-1334U configuration. That could make the new model a much better fit for students, travelers, and anyone who needs a compact laptop that lasts longer away from a charger.
The company has also improved the feature set. The new Laptop 12 configurations include Thunderbolt 4 support through two expansion card slots, allowing users to connect faster storage devices, docks, monitors, and other accessories. WiFi 7 is also included, giving the laptop access to newer wireless networking standards for faster and more reliable connectivity when paired with compatible routers.
Other practical features include a fingerprint reader and a backlit keyboard, both of which make the device more convenient for daily use. Framework is also offering a pre-built version with Fedora Linux installed, marking the first time this option is available directly for customers who prefer Linux out of the box.
In terms of memory and storage, the Framework Laptop 12 supports up to 64 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM and up to 2 TB of M.2 2230 storage. As usual with Framework devices, buyers can configure the machine based on their needs, although the final price can rise quickly depending on the selected parts.
While the entry price is listed at $549, adding a single 8 GB DDR5 memory module and a 500 GB SSD brings the price to around $844. Choosing more RAM, larger storage, an operating system, expansion cards, or a customized keyboard can push the total beyond $1,000.
