Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis will shut down in October 2026 as Square Enix ends another mobile RPG
Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis is officially coming to an end. The mobile gacha RPG will permanently shut down on October 6, 2026, at 11:00 PM PDT, bringing its live-service run to a close shortly after the game celebrates its third anniversary.
The announcement marks another major shutdown in Square Enix’s long-running history of mobile spin-offs. While Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis attracted attention with its polished visuals, nostalgic storytelling, and expanded take on the Final Fantasy VII universe, the game ultimately could not overcome the rising costs of keeping a premium-looking live-service title running.
Producer Shoichi Ichikawa shared a direct explanation with players, making it clear that the decision was not simply about vague market challenges. According to the development team, maintaining the level of visual quality expected from a Final Fantasy VII game became increasingly difficult and expensive.
A major issue was the cost of producing detailed character equipment, weapons, and gear while also keeping the game balanced and fair for players. Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis stood out because of its high-quality presentation, but that same visual ambition made long-term support harder to sustain. In the end, the team could no longer maintain the balance between production demands, gameplay quality, and financial stability.
For players who have followed the story since launch, there is at least some good news. Square Enix does not intend to leave the game’s narrative unfinished. Before the servers close, the development team will release a final wave of content designed to wrap up key storylines and give fans a proper farewell.
During July and August 2026, Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis will add its long-awaited adaptation of Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII-. This mobile-exclusive chapter of the Final Fantasy VII timeline will arrive in three separate parts, giving players a chance to experience an important piece of the franchise’s expanded lore before the game disappears.
On September 6, 2026, the game’s third anniversary event will begin. This update will include the final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII saga within Ever Crisis, along with final weapon upgrades and seasonal quests. The anniversary update is expected to serve as the game’s last major story-focused release.
In the weeks leading up to the October shutdown, Square Enix will also bring back several past events and limited-time campaigns. Returning content will include previous event quests, Guild Battles, and a Festival of Gratitude. This final content wave is designed to let players revisit missed events, complete unfinished goals, and enjoy one last run through the game before service ends permanently.
The shutdown process has already started. New downloads for the Steam PC version of Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis were discontinued on July 7, 2026. However, players who already have the game installed can continue playing until the final shutdown date in October.
Square Enix has also confirmed its refund policy for unused paid currency. Refunds for unused Red Crystals will be available only to players living in Taiwan. Players in other regions will need to use any remaining paid currency before the servers close, as unused balances will not carry over once the game ends.
Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis launched with a strong promise: to retell and expand the world of Final Fantasy VII through a modern mobile RPG format. It featured familiar characters, new scenarios, cinematic battles, and gacha-based progression. For many fans, it offered a convenient way to revisit one of gaming’s most beloved universes.
Still, the shutdown highlights the growing difficulty of sustaining high-budget mobile games. Players often expect console-quality visuals, frequent updates, fair monetization, and generous content schedules, but maintaining that level of production can be costly. Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis appears to have become another example of how even major franchises can struggle in the competitive live-service market.
For now, fans still have a few months to experience the remaining story content, take part in returning events, and say goodbye to the game. Once October 6, 2026 arrives, Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis will officially go offline for good.
