DLSS 5 Neural Rendering Reportedly Runs on RTX 30 GPUs, But Performance Takes a Massive Hit
NVIDIA’s upcoming DLSS 5 Neural Rendering technology is already generating attention ahead of its wider rollout, and new user testing suggests it may be technically possible to run it on older RTX graphics cards. However, early unofficial results show that support on previous-generation GPUs could come with a severe performance penalty.
Recent reports from modders and users experimenting with leaked DLSS files indicate that DLSS 5 Neural Rendering can be enabled on GPUs beyond NVIDIA’s latest hardware. After earlier tests showed the feature running on RTX 40 series cards, a new demonstration has now shown it working on an RTX 30 series GPU, specifically the GeForce RTX 3080.
The test was carried out in Deep Rock Galactic using an unofficial implementation of DLSS 5 Neural Rendering. While the fact that the technology launched at all on an Ampere-based RTX 3080 is notable, the actual gameplay performance was far from practical.
According to the demonstration, the game was running at around 138 FPS before DLSS Neural Rendering was enabled. Once the feature was switched on, performance collapsed to roughly 4 FPS. That represents an enormous drop of about 97%, making the game effectively unplayable.
Frame times also increased dramatically. Before enabling the feature, frame times appeared to sit around 7 to 8 milliseconds. After DLSS 5 Neural Rendering was activated, frame times reportedly jumped to around 260 milliseconds, causing extreme stutter and input lag.
This suggests that while RTX 30 series hardware may be capable of launching DLSS 5 Neural Rendering at a basic level, it does not appear to have the necessary performance headroom or optimization to run it smoothly in its current state.
The result is very different from what has been seen on newer GPU generations. On RTX 50 and RTX 40 series graphics cards, early testing has reportedly shown a much smaller performance impact, usually in the range of 40% to 50%. That is still significant, but far more manageable than the near-total performance collapse seen on the RTX 3080 test.
It is important to note that this is not an official implementation. The feature is not currently ready for RTX 30 series deployment, and NVIDIA has not confirmed whether DLSS 5 Neural Rendering will be released for older graphics cards such as the RTX 20, RTX 30, or RTX 40 series.
At this stage, the RTX 50 series remains the only GPU lineup expected to receive official DLSS 5 Neural Rendering support when the update arrives in the fall. NVIDIA has shown some willingness to bring newer DLSS improvements to older RTX cards, including DLSS 4.5, but DLSS 5 may be more demanding due to its neural rendering workload.
For RTX 30 series owners, the early test is both exciting and disappointing. It shows that the feature is not completely locked out at a hardware level, but the current performance makes it unusable for real gameplay. Unless NVIDIA delivers major optimization or limits the feature to newer architectures, DLSS 5 Neural Rendering may remain a practical advantage reserved for newer GeForce RTX GPUs.
For now, gamers using RTX 3080, RTX 3070, RTX 3060, or other Ampere cards should treat these early DLSS 5 tests as experimental rather than a sign of guaranteed future support. The technology may run, but based on current unofficial results, running it smoothly is a very different challenge.
